Thanks for the tips. Actually I want to apply to a company or two... Who do I want to talk to at a fashion house so that I can produce a portfolio for them?

hmm good question, I don't really know. I would want to shoot for the assistant of the person who actually decides who comes on board. try to make an appointment with the head designers assistant and meet with them, ask them what the company is looking for, be interested in the company vision, and try to get a feel for what they expect. Most of all, get them talking, you will find out the most by asking open ended questions and by seeming moldable. Houses don't really like designers who already know exactly what their style is, it's to hard to retrain them. don't throw your portfollio at them the seccond you get in the door. this business is as much as how you deal with people as how you deal with your designs, so let them ask to see it if they seem interested. It's best if you can form a realationship and network before you actually go in for a formal interview because then you have an internal refference.

I just wanted to say, Thank you so much for this thread!

In one week I begin my TCF Business Studies, I am so scared. I don't need a portfolio as of yet but I am starting to put one together, and this thread has given me so many ideas and small tips! Thank you!

Actually that's what they look for, I had my interview at LCF at couple of weeks ago and I only had three A4 sized portfolios with all my designs in them. They just looked at it and liked so they decided to offer me a place. I wasn't even interviewd. I was kinda surprised myself

I'm thinking of applying to Academy of Art in San Francisco's graduate fashion merchandising program to further my education. Thing is, I don't know what to add into my portfolio. I understand if I were to be going for the design program I would add sketches and things like that, but for the merchandising area?? I took a introductory course for apparel design and I was required to keep a portfolio of all my work for that course, but other than that, I don't really have anything else. What should I do?? By the way, right now I am a junior at LSU majoring in Fashion Merchandising. I'm so confused.

Does the size of the folio matter?Do you have to be really good in drawing?I am not really good at it.(I really suck)So,I am really worried about me not being accepted at uni.
