Actually this is not true. Legally you cannot use someone's copyrighted work without permission. Magazines and websites either commission their own photographers or pay photo agencies for the right to use the images. Most bloggers use images illegally but agencies let it slide because the blogs and small and harmless. Perez hilton on the other hand is facing a lawsuit. how that lawsuit turnes out could have an effect on all bloggers and their abilit to use photos.

Oh, huh. I suppose that makes sense. I've never seen a problem with firstview or style as long as you credit.

Catwalk & backstage and imaxtree are all more stringent, though.

I finally got my much-hyped model gossip and snark blog up!

It's a bit temporary. What do you all suggest for layouts to keep them clean and streamlined and does anyone have knowledge on embedding wordpress? o.O It's driving me nuts.

That's true. If you are a beginning blog with not much traffic then it's not that important to sign up for. Although if you have high traffic #'s, like 5,000k+ people visiting your site per day, then it's totally worth it. You can make, about $70+ a day.

can you get in trouble from using fashion photos, like runway shots? do you have to credit the photographer, or is just like 'luella s/s 08' enough? do you have to credit the site you got them from, like style.com?

if so, how do print magazines get away with just saying the designers name and no other credits?

thanks!
Yeah ... you could be sued, although I guess it doesn't happen often ... but they sure do go after the big guys, like perez.

Credits do not protect you, it's just a courtesy. By US copyright law, you must obtain "user rights" to actually use images that you did not take yourself or risk being sued by the copyright holder. And you get "user rights: by paying for the images . ... like through a stock agency or doing a contract with the photographer ... whoever owns the copyrights.

It's the photographer or if he's contracted to work for someone else, the company that owns the copyright ... not the designer of the clothes, nor the people in the pictures. It's considered an art form of sorts and a picture is owned by the creator.

There are laws to cover forums like this ... as long as they ensure that everyone who posts has agreed to take responsiblity for what they post and they will pull any images if they are put on notice by a copyright holder. We pull images for this reason, from time to time. Pirelli Calendars is one instance ... they watch us like hawks and let us know whenever a bunch op images pop up here ... we take them all down.

However, I do not think that those laws for forums cover blogs, since the blogger is the person putting the pictures up ... so the blogger is financially responsible.

I'm not an attorney ... so if you are thinking of using someone eles's images for you blog ...you really should ask a copyright attorney, first before using them.

Madhuri is correct ...

I use linkshare for my sites and it is very reliable. My partners through them include saks fifth avenue, eluxury, netaporter, nordstroms, Yoox and many other designer boutiques.

commission junction is also a great one!

thankyou everyone for the info, especially bettet. karma for you!

i never realised it could be so confusing and costly....
i know on blogs nobody will really care but i am in the future doing an online magazine... which would be more professional and i wouldn't want to slip up and be sued.
looks like all original photos/outfits/recreations then!

When you register to linkshare how do you use partners? how do you make money out of blogs with linkshare (how does it work, really?)

when you sign up for an account you can search through their directory of boutiques/shops. Once you gain approval into the program --some sites want to look at your blog first-- you will be able to use their link when you talk about product, shop or whatever your topic is on. Also you can post banners on your site.

For instance if I am talking about a Prada bag from Saks in my post I can a link directly to Saks front page or directly to the product. Then when someone makes a purchase through clicking on that special affiliate link, which has your id in the url, you will earn a commission (% varies).

hope i helped

I've just sat and read 7 entire pages of posts in this thread - and I must say you have all inspired me! I do have a few questions that I still confused over.

I know some people are not in this for the revenue, but I am interested in possibly making money off blogging. Where should I go if I want to put up ads? So Google AdSense isn't a good idea for me then? Unless I have huge traffic (which I don't since I am just starting). If you have a blog w/ads, when did you decide to put them up? Do you actually ever see money from them?

I know I need to find my niche first... that's probably the hardest part. I think I may have found a solid idea that I want to do, I just have to see if I can do it first (before making it public). I'll send you all the link when I get things started. If you someone could answer my questions though, that'd be great.

I do love blogging, but I have to admit.. the profit of it, is definitely a plus. I mean if you love blogging about a certain topic why not get paid for it. My suggestion if you want to see profit is you may want to sign up for the sites I listed before (commission junction, linkshare, google adsense, etc). Google adsense isn't a bad idea to sign up for.. it's just you wont see a decent profit for a while.

what type of blog are you thinking about starting smashingv? your topic?

Welcome to tFS, Julio!

Here's where you should post to get your question answered .. the Fashion Blogs thread in Personal Style.

We are so big, I know it's hard to find what you want, but we have a very good search engine ... if you use advanced search Just ask to search by titles only and give results as threads ..(or you get way too much stuff). We try to keep the thread titles search friendly here ... so it's easy to find things this way.
