This may a bit of a stupid question, but I'll just try asking anyway.

Is it necessary to be doing a degree in fashion or something fashion-related before you can intern in a fashion house/in the fashion industry?

I'm currently doing a degree in Business (hopefully to be specializing in Marketing) but fashion has always been my first interest and passion, although for personal reasons that are mostly financial, I can't study fashion at the moment.

We have to do a year or semester (can't remember which) of compulsory professional attachment aka interning during our later years, and I'm interested in looking to do mine in a fashion-related company.

Also, because I'm not based in the US, do companies in the US take in international students for interning?

^if you have a degree in Business, you can totaly work in a fashion House... though you won't take part in the "design" process, i think.
but you can of course do interesting things.... Business' a GREAT part of Fashion Industry.... and it's an internship, so not necessary maybe to be specialized in fashion marketing for a first step....

i don't know where you live but isn't there any fashion labels where you live?
but i'm sure they take international students in US. then you have to know if your university is ok for making this internship with USA....
but in the business, i'm sure you won't have any problem....

blackpeace, it isn't necessary at all. However, most fashion houses are usually looking for interns to somehow contribute from a design perspective which means one of two things; if you don't have the experience it may be a tad bit harder to land a design position or that you need to take the initiative to search for a position which fits your degree. Otherwise, why would you pursue a conflicting degree/position? Also consider pursuing experience which will compliment your degree and a position which will insure you that you're actively contributing out of passion and interest and not just out of necessity.

Also, I love your Mika icon.

Well I figured that Business, Marketing, would have some sort of connection with the fashion industry (well actually any sort of industry in fact because if you don't know how to market properly, even if you have the greatest invention possible, nobody's going to know about it and buy your product). So even if I can't do the 'real' design/fashion-oriented internships, at least I can learn about fashion from a business perspective? It has always been a dream of mine to start up a fashion-related business as well.

Thanks. Is your screenname taken from the L'arc en ciel song?

If you're talking about local designers, there isn't a plethora of them where I'm from. But the usual fashion labels...of course.

Hello to everybody, i study Business Administration (specialisation is Marketing) in Estonian Business School and this summer i want to do my intern in Milan, in showroom as a seller.
do you think it is possible to get a place like that? i am flunet in English and Russian, but Italian is just on really elementary level..i was thinking that i can work with Russian/English speaking clients at the beginning and in one year, when i am done with my Bachelor degree i will be able to speak Italian well (i am going to start Italian language course in March). Besides that i am a model, so i have the idea how the work in a showroom is going so i guess it can be a big plus for me..=)
have anybody had any experience getting an intern here in Milano?? really curious to know how it was and if you liked it or not

big thanks!!! all advices are highly appreciated!!!

FINALLY!

I was informed this afternoon that Zac Posen wants me to start Monday.

They are slightly concerned that I won't be able to handle the commute to their studio (I live in NJ), but I've assured them that it won't be a problem, as I deal with a far worse commute to school on a daily basis.

As long as the first week goes well, I think it's smooth sailing ahead!

Thanks! Yes, I do!
I'm a little bit scared, too, though.

don't worry, all you can do is your best which I'm sure is far above average if they chose you. At least you found a position.

For me I just "cold call" emailed my resume to someone at yigal azrouel and two people at vera wang. Man, I hope I get some calls back. I haven't seen too many opportunities posted lately (that fit me).

I was just wondering something. The director of my potential internship emailed me about 10 days ago for an interview this coming Monday, saying she's interested in meeting with me, etc. She said call asap so we can arrange a time. Part of me thinks it's too late and amateur to call so late, but another part of me is saying call. I just feel really unprofessional and weird calling, should I pass it up? I'd appreciate any advice.

Also, that sounds amazing, pinksatin. Good luck!

Also, a short article on Stacey Farber's (from Degrassi) experience working at Teen Vogue. She doesn't mention too much about what she gets done there-or how she got the job for that matter-but I thought some would be interested.

In essence:It might be easier to land an internship at a leading magazine if you have the boost of celebrity?
DriversHigh, can you supply a source for this article, please, per the tFS rules?
