I did the fashion business course at FBI, biggest waste of time ever re.education wise, but myself and two of my friends all got jobs in fashion PR through doing work expience at our time there.
I am now doing the Diploma of Textiles, clothing and footwear at TAFE and its awesome.

make sure you can draw or if you can't go and do the workshop they have before you go for the interviews. They run through how to put your portfolio together and i think some drawing techniques

Thank you so much rarasuperstar for your response, I can draw ok, so you just have to show them some of your work in the past is that right? What sort of questions do they ask in the interview and is the course at Tafe better?!

Joe

I didnt know UTS did fashion.. how long are the courses there ? JoeG, what course are u planning on doing ?

I'm going to start a Fashion Illustration short course at TAFE, has anyone done this ?

Also, if when applying for courses, you need to present a portfolio, do you just make some of your own drawings / designs ? What if you have had no experience ..?

Has anyone done the Fashion courses at TAFE? I am trying to decide between doing Nursing and doing something creative, like Fashion. The course I am contemplating doing is Diploma of Applied Fashion Design & Technology, which used to be called Diploma of Textiles, Clothing and Footwear. I think the name change was to get more attention.

Anyway, what I like about the course is it starts off with the really basic stuff, sewing, constructing patterns etc. While I can sew, I am very out of practice. I'm too late to apply for any of the courses at uni and was thinking this might be a good start.

Here is the basic course outline:

Course outline: This course is hands-on and industry focused. Students explore the dynamics of fashion design while learning pattern making, garment construction, textiles and fabric selection, computerised grading/marker making, and business applications. Students specialise in custom-made garments through to high volume production, and in the marketing/business and merchandising areas of the fashion industry. They undertake a common first year with the opportunity to specialise in second year. The vocational placement component of the course provides industry experience.

The link below has all the course units that I would be doing.

http://www.sunshinecoast.tafe.qld.go...ourseid=27&p=1

I would be grateful for any advice that anybody has for me. Thanks heaps.

I also suggest tafe for fashion design or Whitehouse Design School. I did attend FBI fashion college a few years ago and found it was not very professional or informative. I have heard their repututaion has diminshed of late. FBI is great for work experience, but that is about it. If you are looking for work experience opportunities on top of study, I suggest calling the designers directly... they will like your initiative Good Luck
