Los Angeles Cosmetology Schools
Does anyone have any recommendations for Cosmetology Schools in LA? I
plan to attend a school after August this year, and I am looking for
ideas. I live in Long Beach so I am looking for LA/South Bay/Long
Beach schools.

Any input would help.

Thanks

Re: Los Angeles Cosmetology Schools
I don't know if you're the same person who was asking about Orange County
schools, but I recommended Golden West College in Huntington Beach, which of
course you know is very close to Long Beach. Why would you want to drive up
to LA?? Golden West is a Junior College, so the tuition is much lower than a
private school. Cosmetology school is to teach you the basic things you need
in order to pass your state board exam.

I would also recommend the community college system since they require MORE
of their instructors and more work experience than the private schools.
GW is a great school. check out Cerritos and Cypress and also Orange
Coast.... just as KB suggested

Re: Los Angeles Cosmetology Schools
So, the school you attend has nothing to do with job potential, it is
only experience and study to pass the exam?

I was planning on working as an assistant for a period of time after
passing the exam, and hopefully landing a job at an upscale salon. I
know college degrees from certain schools are sometimes considered
more valuable, say for instance in the job market for the business
profession. Does this thinking not apply to the Cosmetology
profession?

Thanks

Cosmetology Schools
Hi - I'm new to the board, have been lurking for a lil' bit now....
Anyway, I'm thinking of changing careers and going into hair styling, coloring, cutting, etc... but want to go to a good school that could help me get into a good salon in NYC. Does anyone have any suggestions??

Thanks in advance.

I am a cosmetologist...Please keep in mind that if you are thinking about going into a good salon right after beauty school that they are not going to let you cut hair right away. I aprenticed/assisted at a salon for about a year before I was even allowed to have a chair. Do some assisting while you are in school for a jump start I also did that as well...I was a colourist (the salon I worked at was compartementalized) when I left the salon it makes alot more money than a cutter...I now work for a professional haircare company.

http://p082.ezboard.com/bmakeupandrelatedindustries Go here to network with an active community of makeup artists and pose you questions there.

Also, spend some time reading the FAQ's there ... there's pages of old threads addressing all sorts of things a makeup artist needs to know ... like products and application, tricks of the trade and the very important things you need to know about the business of being a freelance artist.

Be wary of most makeup artistry schools ... many do not give you what you need to even be a competent assistant to a key artist and most do not really teach you how to build your own business. Often the teachers are not working artists and they teach old techniques and products. Relearch every school very carefully. And research the market that you live in ... if you want to do films, you need to be in L.A., catalogs ... L.A., Chcago, NY probably, fashion shoots ... NY and Miami in the winter and so on. Of course, there's weddings everywhere but the products and techniques are different than print.
