^ To be honest I think you would have to go down the route of internships first before getting paid work, especially if you're still in school! I know that's the way it seems to work in the States and it's definitely the way it works in Paris, where I am! The best bet for paid work as opposed to internships is London because the system of internships etc is not as set in stone there as it is in Paris or NY, some people do take on interns etc but there is not much regulatory framework involving the colleges and college credit etc..
I am not sure where to find work without concrete contacts in London but you could try LVMH for example they have a recruitment section on their site, (lvmh.com) or Gucci Group give a postal address in London to send your CV to as far as I remember, it's on their website anyway! Oh and if you are thinking of looking for work in France English speakers are at a big advantage but ONLY if you speak fluent french too! Hope that helps
