A rather off the wall question, but I was considering the idea of perhaps working as a makeup artist for a funeral home for the summer. Does anyone know anything about this, or how to get started?

Are you in the U.S.? If so contact your state's licensing board as to what you need to get qualified (if anything). A listing is available from the National Funeral Directors Association.
