Making the Transition from Fashion Blogger to Mainstream Media

I know alot of fashion bloggers are on TFS. I work in digital media quite a bit, wanted to just start a thread about making the transition from fashion blogger to more mainstream media. Is anyone doing this here? I may have insight and can help. I think the market's shifting to digital and a lot of companies in big media are looking for people - maybe this would all make for a great discussion!

Well, I just started writing for a fashion blog and my ultimate goal is to write for print magazines. I'm only sixteen so I can't really think of any other way to begin. I'm looking forward to learning something new from this thread though.

Ah, now actually, if smart you can be very viable to the market right now. You are the interactive demographic. Statistically, you're age group is the marketing sweet spot, so being a solid voice to that audience doesn't hurt. What are you writing about right now? Can you share the blog?

Don't let your age make you feel like it's a setback. It's more about brains than anything!! Stick with it!

hello lilmissbee Welcome to theFashionspot

you mention the market is shifting to digital
what did you mean by mainstream media? media that has a bigger identity (rather than fashion blogging which is usually the thoughts of one or few persons?)

Gee ... Would you be willing to share your thoughts here, imagensfashions?

That way, we could all learn from each other and it would develop into a good discussion thread. That's what we encourage everyone to do ... share publically ... unless it's too personal, of course.

By mainstream media, I mean all the big players - so it could be a magazine, a newspaper, or a large internet site, like AOL or Yahoo.

Thanks for answering
Are you focusing more on 'writing jobs' ? Like journalism, etc.

How can you approach these mainstream media
if the only writing experience you have is your own blog ?
(I'm also starting to write articles for other people's blogs too)

I'm certainly interested in this
I have a blog in my signature, if you have some time to check it out

I'm already a journalist now, but I do use the blog and social media sites i've started as leverage, absolutely, for other stuff.

You just have to go after what you want. I read constantly and if there is somebody I want to know or network with, or get in front of, I find their email and I email them. Sometimes, it can take a while to do but I'm tenacious. I just email, make clear why I think we could have synergy and just see how it goes from there.

Writing is all about talent. Yea, as a journalist you need to know also how to write under deadlines, write into a specific voice, etc. but that should all be something you can either already do or adapt to quickly because you've already got the writing talent, so focus on what you can provide and just keep going after as much work as possible. Email those you'd like to work with and just keep at it. Networking is a huge, huge part. Not all networking provides an outcome right away so just do it to expand your collection of contacts more than to see immediate results. start by going to sites and reading other journalist's stuff and email them saying "hey, your work is great - i'm just starting out, but doing well, you can see me on xyz. if you're ever free we should get lunch. it's always good to know people in the industry!'

believe it or not, it's actually a little hard to find good writers and especially ones who deliver as freelancers. be super sharp and on time all the time, sticking to the word count and understanding the audience regardless of who you write for as much as possible.

hope that's helpful! I'll check out your blog!

Ah ... OK ... no problem.

I just thought you had some advice or information to offer and I'd love to see your comments, but of course this was more personal.
