Generally, it's the eye, not the gear, that makes a photograph great. Having said that, I would recommend the Nikon D70s or D50. I have been shooting with Nikons for 30 years, and they have become an extension of myself. You might also consider the Canon Rebel XT. Cart yourself down to a camera store and 'try one on for size'... Avoid Konica/Minolta cameras. They announced today that they are getting out of the Photo business, sold out to SONY! Good luck, and ask a lot of questions. There's a lot of help out there.

your budget is the deciding factor...
you can go for the Canon EOS 350D, can say that its the best entry level professional camera, also check out the nikon D200.

If you're going with a pro camera, than I suggest one of the ones above. (besides the Rebel XT)

But if you're looking for a pro-sumer camera (a mix between consumer and pro) then I suggest a higher end canon or nikon.

Check out dpreview.com for a really in depth look at almost any camera. A lot of it is technical, but they do have a sample picture gallery.

if you are just starting out but want a camera that takes pics as good as the pros....go for the digital rebel XT by canon. (boy did that just sound like a commercial ) there are a bunch of different lenses they have for it and it's been one of their most popular cameras, both for pros and for beginners....i think they are about $800+ for the basic camera, but there are tons of accessories and stuff to get for it. and if you go to camera stores, apparently the canon cameras have the most universal ability to take other lenses and filters and such...hope that helps

I'd avoid Pentax and think only about Canon, IMO.

Canon 20/30D, 5D and if you can afford it the 1Ds Mark II is what most working pros shoot with.
