Hi Melissa

No i don't have a website at the moment, as i want to update my book, and then and only then will i spend some decent cash on a good website. Thank you for your complement on my work, think it may have needed a little more light in the eyes, although i was trying to achieve a sixties feel by using harsh shadows

Cheers

you have a simple set up for your images, which is always good to start off with. the thing with simplicity is that there better be something going on for the simplicity to work (i mean, not all the time - there's no TRUE equation to it all). I don't feel like i get anything from the models. The models need to draw the viewer in...they are to make the viewer wish they were those models.
that's the way fashion photography work...making an absurd ideal to have normal people desperately try to become...try so hard they will buy that product they are holding/wearing/representing.
so as for technique..you're on your way...just get yourself some models that can play to the camera and you will bring your work up to a whole new level.
cheers!

Probably already asked 28739827 times: What constitutes fashion photography? I'm not a photographer at all but I'm thinking about the field. Most of my pictures are of friends, and they're wearing clothes so

???

Wow pamelaz, sprinkles! I love them. How delicious

fashion photography??
Hi bridget

I think a fashion photo is about selling a dream as opposed to a regular portrait. It's about exploring and presenting an image and a lifestyle to people. There's a huge creative team behind all of this and it's the photographers job to capture all the creative input on the day of the shoot ( no pressure at all ) Ultimately it's about selling the product. Everything from the models, hair and make up artists, fashion editors and photographers are meticulously chosen to hopefully complement one and others creativity. Just flick through some fashion magazines and see what draws you in. Havent you ever looked at say, a perfume ad and loved the photo so much you've gone to a department store to see what it smells like. Maybe the photo connects with you in some way or another - thats me or thats what I want to be? Ultimately, it's about selling the name and product. It's art and commerce. Perfume, clothes, it's all the same.

However, look at the great Mario Testino's photos. Some of his portraits are fashion photos and some of his fashion photos are portraits!!

The simple term is photographers are photographers, but if you shoot in the fashion industry, you're a fashion photographer.

Hope that clarifies it a bit more?

Cheers

hello that day

these are a good start, for being self-taught! i would say that the angles are kind of awkward...sometimes awkward works, but here it's just...awkward. in the 2 color photos, especially. in the last one, with the yellow shoes, what is she reaching for? there is nothing anchoring anything here. what i think you need to work on is composition...pay a lot of attention to negative space as well as your subject. the shadows and flickers of light are a bit distracting. that can definitely work in a photo, but just pay attention to what it's doing. compose in your viewfinder and crop there as well. at this point, they just look like portraits to me - not fashion at all.

my favorite of the 3 is the second one, with the clenched fist. the color is good, and i like the expression on her face. nice work

no problem at all - it helps me in my work too

in the first one, that pole is super distracting. i'd say lose it. in the one next to it, the same girl is much more appealing...the lighting is very dramatic, and i like the angle. it's cropped a bit strangely, but i think it works.

in the second 2, i like the first one a lot. the shadows, in this case, work really well, they create interesting lines on the model's body. i would like to see more of the bag. the one next to it though bothers me for a few reasons: the cars in the background, and the fact that the bag is cut off. i do really like the perspective and i like the shadows in that one as well. but as i said earlier, sometimes they just look like portraits and not fashion shots. the last one is the one that most speaks to me as a fashion shot, but the cars are bothersome. they might not bother anyone else but i'm super minimal in my work and tend to cut out extraneous information. that's just me though

nice work!

thanks for the advice. I pretty much agree with everything you said. on the last two picture i have been told that that shadows work, liek you said and also that they don't work, so i guess it just comes down to the individual photographer. i will try to use your advice to improve my photos. thanks.
