lucy, the 30s at their most stylish and glamourous
!it´s amazing how much joan bennett´s appearance changed when she started to dye her hair black and became the heroine of several great films noirs....reminds me of her sister constance, known as one of the best dressed women during the 30ssources:as above, scanned by me (i know about lupe velez tragic life story but haven´t seen any of her films yet) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I don't like Joan when she wore dark hair in the 40's. I read somewhere she tried to imitate Hedy Lamarr's style. Definitely, I prefer her as a blonde.

irene dunne is an unjustly forgotten actress, like so many...clara calamai played the leading role in visconti´s ossessione from 1942.it was his version of "the postman always rings twice" .even though i like the 2 holllywood versions too i prefer this one sinve visconti didn´t focus on the crime itsself but on the disastrous effect it had on the couple and their psychological decline. i then saw her again in a small role in visconti´s le notti bianche.she was supposed to play anna magnani´s role in rossellini´s "roma citta aperta" but didn´t get the role in the end....the rest is history .i didn´t post this pc´s in the 40s thread because i´m rather sure that they must be from the end of the 30s when she started her carreer.ossessione was shot in 42 and she did look..umm... older/more mature in the film than in these pics. ![]() ![]() scanned by me

lucy, who wouldn´t want to look like hedy lamarr
.....joan bennett was certainly a more...umm..pleasant,softer and nautral beauty as a blonde, but i couldn´t imagine her playing the parts she did in woman in the window or scarlet street as a blonde.the black hair gave her these mysterious femme fatale looks that these roles demanded.she wouldn´t have been effective as a sweet pretty blonde.ann harding, she makes me think of ophelia and the lady of shalott at the same time.she dared to stay true to her own style and resisted the trends... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() sources:golden treasure album of hte screen, picture show annuals 33/36,filmgoer´s annual 32 scanned by me

Ann Harding is gorgeous! I love her hair. Thanks for posting, somnabule.
Actually, all of these women were so beautiful. I love the 1930s. Last edited by Glittery_Bug : 09-09-2008 at 07:58 AM. |
