I love that picture of her with Belmondo!

Here's a great still from Pierrot le Fou, and an animated .gif of Ms. Karina. I use it as my buddy icon on AIM, but you can just goggle at her lovely eye...

the icon is from http://www.ronaldraygun.com/gerardo/icons/icon2.html# , under Movies and Actors

^ No worries, I'm still head over heels for Belmondo.... even as an old fogie boxeur in Les Miserables (1995).

Love the Onion interview! Thanks for unearthing that... ^^

From Bande a part, Pierrot le fou and the original of the pic posted above for the onion article... (just pulled from google, but there's the link anyway)

I like him so much. They were so lovely acting together in those Godard's early films.

I'd never heard of her, so for the ones with me here's a bio from that geocities site. Such diverse qualities, I can't believe I don't know who she is. I think I know how I will be spending my time this summer instead of scorching in the sun.

Quote:
Birth name: Hanne Karin Blarke Bayer
Quote:
Birth date: 20th September 1940
Birth place: Copanhagen, Denmark
Age this year: 64
Height: 5ft 9in/175cm
Married: Jean-luc Godard (1961-1966)

Anna Karina began her career in Denmark as a cabaret singer, a model, an actress in advertsements and eventually in short films. When she was 17, she travelled to Paris and got several acting jobs. Anna would meet Coco Chanel, who would change her name from Hanne Karin to Anna Karina. She was then spotted by Jean-luc Godard, at that time, only a writer for Cahiers du Cinema.

Godard approached Anna with a role in A Bout de Souffle (1959) that required Anna in a topless scene. Anna duly declined, and the role remained absent from the eventual film. However, the opportunity arose later for Anna to collaborate with Godard, now famous, when she was approached to work on Le Petit Soldat. Anna and Jean-luc got married during this time.

The team of Anna Karina and Jean-luc Godard would yield seven films, the most frequently mentioned ones being Vivre Sa Vie, Bande a Part and Alphaville. After completing Pierrot Le Fou, Karina and Godard divorced but in 1967 worked on one more film together, Made In USA.

In 1961, Anna won Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival for her performance as Angela in Une Femme est Une Femme. Anna's career includes numerous highlights outside the seven Godard films. In fact, one her best performances came acting as the troubled young nun in La Religeuse, a Jacques Rivette film which would gain notoriety for its depiction of the Catholic Church. Anna has also worked with legendary director Luis Visconti in The Stranger.

In 1973, Anna made her directorial debut in Vivre Ensemble, a film in which she also starred. Anna would also write and star in the 1987 film Last Song, a musical drama. More recently, Anna was seen in the French film Haut, Bas, Fragile and sings a tango in the 2002 film The Truth About Charlie.

Anna has also been active in writing and recording music. Beginning in the 1960s, she has worked with legendary songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, a collaboration which yielded the classic song, Sous le soleil exactement. More recently, Anna has been recording and touring with French singer-songwriter Philippe Katerine. Aside from her work in music, Anna has also written a novel and appeared on several occassions on television.

In spite of this diversity, Anna Karina will always be best remembered all over the world for her work in the Godard years. The Anna Karina of those years is frozen in time, and her legacy is set in stone. To fans everywhere, Anna Karina is always also Marianne in that red dress, Odille dancing, and Nana weeping to Jean d'Arc.

I just finished watching La Religeuse and decided to give this thread a bump! I think Anna is so stunning and a great actress. I liked La Religeuse a lot and I want to take out her other movies from the library, but they are all out on loan so I'll have to wait.
