Night of the Iguana' playing at the Degenstein Center

SELINSGROVE -- The Susquehanna University Theater Department presents "The Night of the Iguana" at the Degenstein Center Theater today through Sunday at 8 p.m. nightly.

Written by Tennessee Williams and based on his 1948 short story, "Night of the Iguana" is a psychological drama of carnality, repression and emotional conflict. The play appeared on Broadway in 1961, followed by two film adaptations including a critically acclaimed production starring Richard Burton and Ava Gardner.

Directed by Dr. W. Douglas Powers, the show features a cast of 14 actors including some of the department's most accomplished performers. Senior Chris Payseur plays Reverend T. Lawrence Shannon, alongside Melissa J. Swartz as Maxine Faulk, John O'Connor as Nonno and Julie Ek as Hannah Jelkes.

Admission is free to Susquehanna University students. Additional tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for non-SU students. Tickets can be purchased at the Degenstein Center Box Office by calling 372-ARTS or can be purchased at the door.

My NC
WAKE COUNTY, N.C.
As a result of the successful Ava Gardner Film Festival, local artists began a grassroots effort to bring an art gallery and venue for showing independent films year-round to Smithfield. The River City Arts (RCA) opened this November in Downtown Smithfield at 109 S. Third Street.
RCA will be a multi-purpose space offering an art gallery, art exhibition space, a micro-cinema, a live music and performing venue, and a location for teaching and learning about the arts.
Each Month, RCA participates in "THIRD ON THIRD", much like First Friday in Raleigh, or 4th Friday in Charlotte. THIRD ON THIRD is a time for openings and receptions for Art Exhibitions, Art Events and a variety of activities.

od Lurie, who directs Kate Beckinsale in the new movie "Nothing But the Truth," says the actress's beauty could be an obstacle. "She's too good looking to play Ava Gardner," Lurie laughed yesterday. "Sometimes, you have to apply makeup to make it look like she isn't wearing makeup." In the film, which screens tomorrow at Brandeis, Beckinsale plays a journalist who outs a CIA agent and then spends a year in jail rather than revealing her source. If that sounds familiar, it should. Her character is loosely based on former New York Times reporter Judith Miller, who was locked up for 85 days during the Valerie Plame affair. "I did meet with her, but not to copy her mannerisms," said Beckinsale, who's coming to Brandeis with costar Alan Alda. The actress said she also shadowed a few female staffers at the LA Times, and gained newfound respect for their profession. "As an actress, I was slightly prejudiced because I've fallen on the journalist's sword a few times," she told us. "But being with them, I felt similar pressures - to pick up and disappear and not be in touch with family for a while." Alda, whose character is modeled on famed First Amendment lawyer Floyd Abrams, said Beckinsale is terrific and the film is timely. "Having a vote is important, but it's no good if you don't know what you're voting about," he said. "The only way is with a free press."
