Monte Carlo 1939...The man knew how to live- Always stayed at the Plaza when in NY...God knows how much money I spent there over the years because I had to go there for brunch or a cocktail just because he would have gone there...!! And let's not even start on the custom made shirts and all...

On 59th St outside of the aforementioned Plaza Hotel with Hitchcock filming North By Northwest..Cary wearing the only good looking sack suit ever made, by Quintino of Beverly Hills, of course...There's an interesting story about this famous glen plaid suit, if anyone wants to hear it...

As above...The original tan-master- although he credits Douglas Fairbanks Sr, whom he met as a young performer, as getting him into always keeping a tan... In later years he found out having a deep tan meant needing hardly any make up for his films, which he hated wearing...

OK, if you've seen North by Northwest, he wore this three button glen plaid suit through about 90% of the film (there were several suits, I'm sure, since one got trashed in the famous scene in cornfields with the biplane!)...But Martin Landau's character in the film, the creepy assistant to James Mason's villain, was one of the most enigmatic rolls, much written about since the film came out...Was he a hit man? A gay lover? Trying to take over the operation from the boss? It is hard to tell...So Hitchcock decided he needed to align him with Roger Thronhill (Cary) as a bridge between the Good Guys and the evil ones... To indicate this. he secretly sent Martin to Cary's own tailor to have an almost identical suit made up, it is actually the same suit in a worsted fabric...Cary knew nothing of this until they showed up to start filming and evidently was not too happy about it- and of course, being Cary Grant he knew immediately where the suit came from!
So if you watch the movie, you can see two main characters wearing almost identical outfits from the same custom tailor, which actually sounds just like a Hitchcock sort of subliminal connection...
