Charlie Chaplin

charliechaplin.nl

Quote:
Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, Jr, KBE (16 April188925 December1977), better known as Charlie Chaplin, was an Englishcomedyactor. Chaplin became one of the most famous performers as well as a notable director and musician in the early to mid Hollywoodcinema era. He is considered to be one of the finest mimes and clowns ever caught on film and has greatly influenced performers in this field.
Chaplin was also one of the most creative and influential personalities in the silent film era. He acted in, directed, scripted, produced, and eventually scored his own films. His working life in entertainment spanned over 65 years, from the Victorian stage and music hall in England as a child performer, almost until his death at the age of eighty-eight. Chaplin's high-profile public and private life encompassed highs and lows with both adulation and controversy.
His principal character was "The Tramp" (known as "Charlot" in France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal and Turkey). "The Tramp" is a vagrant with the refined manners and dignity of a gentleman. The character wears a tight coat, over sized trousers and shoes, a derby, carries a bamboo cane, and has a signature toothbrush mustache.

Here are links to some of his films that are now in the public domain and free to watch!

All four of the these shorts from 1917 can be seen here: The Immigrant, The Adventurer, The Cure, and Easy Street.

The Kid, 1921

The Gold Rush, 1925

A Woman of Paris, 1923

If you search video.google.com, you will find lots more!

Hee! I never thought I'd see a Chaplin thread here, but his style was certainly distinctive.

Here is the link to the archive.org search for Chaplin. There are far too many of his films available for me to post them all. Usually, when I find a movie on archive.org, someone has posted it on video.google.com where I watch a full screen version.

Enjoy!

One A.M. is a brilliant little short film of his for those who haven't seen it. I'm sure it's on youtube.
