The Graduate (Great Soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel...with Ann Bancroft in gorgeous leopard print coat and a young Dustin Hoffman.)
Taxi Driver (with Robert DeNiro...great)
These two are fantastic. The Graduate's so naughty and sexy and sort of incest--but awesome.

My lecturer recommended This is Spinal Tap and you can only get the jokes if you know the 'rock n roll scene'

May I also suggest Hud with Paul Newman

REAR WINDOW. It's such a Hitchcock classic. There are now so many poor copies of it. Jimmy Stewart is great and Grace Kelly ... you know.

Don't sleep on the French classics. Some suggestions:

400 blows. (1959) Boy coming of age.
Breathless. (1960 or 1961)
Jean Seberg's ultra-cute haircut predates Mia Farrow's in Rosemary's Baby.
Les Diaboliques. (1955)
Evil scheme.
Jules and Jim
. (1962) Threesome obsession.
Pépé le Moko. (1937) Hearthrob Jean Gabin hiding in the hood.
DayBreak (Le jour se leve) (1939)
The Bride wore black (1958)
Revenge and mayhem
The Story of Adele H. (1975)
Fatal obsession
The last metro. (1980)
Elevator to the Gallows. (1957)
Goodbye, Children. (1987)
Sublime
Diva (1981) Cool, artsy, flirty
Betty Blue (1986) Beatrice Dalle at her best.
La Femme Nikita (1990) The original badass white female that set the tone for all the current female action heroes.

The following are newer, but they WILL become classics.
Amelie. Of course!!!
8 Women. (2002) It has Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Emmanuelle Beart, Fanny Ardant, Virginie Ledoyen, Ludivine Sagnier, Firmine Richard. Need I say more?
Les Choristes (The Chorus) 2004. Sublime!!
There are soooo many good French classics. Yes, I am a total Francophile. :p

Katharine is amazing. I think that The Philadelphia Story is my all-time favorite movie of hers.
