Thank you for starting the thread!! There was a documentary done back when called "Richard Burton: In from the cold" which was truly jaw dropping...He was an amazing man, and I loved his sophisticated/sporty masculine style...Great idea for a thread!!

Alicia, you're a wonder!! Thanks you so much, great pictures!!
My favorite Richard films are Wagner, an amazing mini series- unbelievable scope about an unbelievable man, and a seldom seen classic, Massacre In Rome with Marcello Mastroianni- one of the best psychological dramas I've ever seen! The title throws people of but it is a very fine film...
Have you ever seen pictures in a tuxedo wearing a white turtleneck?? He and a couple of Jet Set people started wearing this too cool look for a short time in the late 60s, I believe, and I can never find pics of it...
beautiful pictures of this remarkable man and actor.he´s one of my favourites.he had an immense talent and raw energy that hollywood didn´t do enough justice imo.i loved him in look back in anger (he was a force of nature there),the night of the iguana, equus, who´s a afraid of virginia woolf (terrific and almost frightenning) and the spy that came in from the cold.i love the fact that he was in love with words, poetry (reminding me of oscar werner a bit..not only in this case).."home is there the books are"....his voice was also remarkable.i have his reading of " the love poems of john donne" he had such a feeling for the innate rythm of the words.i have yet to hear (or see) under the milkwood.dylan thomas was burton´s friend.he admired him a lot and was smitten when he died, but he remarked that that´s the welsh way to die, because of melancholy and alcohol .
i love his pride, honesty, unyieldingness, uprightness and his rough, welsh edges never polished by (high) society...i´ll post some exceprt from the bio rich-the life of richard burton by melvyn bragg...
even though there´s no caption it looks as if it was from "who´s afraid of virginia woolf"
studio portrait,1959
burton reading on the terrace of the house in celigny
a warner publicity shot for richard with his co-star in the bramble bush angie dickinson,1959
and inevitably..taylor´s and burton´s first marriage,1964 (as a couple they could be quite annoying even though they were nice to look at and fortunately at heir best made remarkable films)
the couple with julie andrews
during the shooting of becket
my favourite picture of richardthe lonely welsh warrior
on location filming under the milkwood,1971.he had played in its first performance on radio.
the spy who came in from the cold (great film...and brings two of my favourite actors together)

Who can he be
That man alone in the saloon bar's corner?
Who can he be
that man alone, solitary, musing, remembering
What can he be?
The shoulders haunched
The face pocked, rived and valleyed
With a lifetime's small tragedies
The slanting mirror on the wall
Emblemed with Ind Coope and Alsop (sic)
Reflecting his receding hair
his thick shoulders
His silent simian hirsute hands
What is, what was the weight
that sloped those haunching shoulders
that man alone, solitary, musing, thinking
of what can he be
nothing?
Or does he live again the nightmare
Of all the shame he suffered and
made others suffer
the torn promise, the shattered word
His red hand caught in the emotional till
The things he had never done
and never would do now
Lost lovely things, the hopeless things long lost
The hot blush of childhood lies
Love and hate and fear and love
again and hate
And the ultimate terrable
ineluctable wrath of God
Does he hear the silent howl
of death? Haunched solitary, silent
That man alone in the saloon bar's corner
That man alone, solitary, musing
who can he be?
I lift my eyes from the bitter pint
I see that man in the mirror
That man is me

i hope it´s not inappropiate if i post more excerpts from the book.i know this is the style icon thread so it should be about fashion and style but in burton´s case i think his personality was the most dazzling thing about him andn outshone anything he could have worn ...and then of course his talent and his classic face....to me his style doesn´t reeally matter.he could have worn sackcloth and still be just as dazzling and fascinating (or even more so )...so if anyone is annoyed by the quotes from the book let me know about it.there are many excerpts from his notebooks in it and i think it gives a lot of insight.he was such a witty ,smart, sometimes sharp observer, intelligent and struggling....
sources:
melvyn bragg-rich
helmut berger-ich
with philip burton, his mentor, who should give him his surname
richard as prince hal, henry IV,stratford 1951."burton is a still brimming pool, running disturbingly deep:at twenty-five he commands repose and can make silence garrulous."kenneth tynan
richard and his third wife susan in the grounds of le pays de galles, celigny
marriage to sally,las vegas,1983
elizabeth and richard with different partners..strange somehow
one could argue who´s stealing the show here....i´d say helmut berger
