Loren comes top in beauty poll, naturally By ALISON HARDIE
SHE has embraced the looks and the figure that God and copious dishes of spaghetti gave her, wears spectacles and has never once succumbed to plastic surgery. But yesterday Sophia Loren, the 71-year-old actress, was voted the world's most naturally beautiful person, beating younger beauties including Cameron Diaz to the title.
In an era when women in Hollywood are under constant pressure to remain stick thin and retain their youthful looks by going under the knife, Ms Loren has steadfastly refused to compromise. Her rejection of plastic surgery culture is now paying handsome dividends to the star of movies including El Cid and Brief Encounter. She is due to grace the pages of the iconic Pirelli calendar next year, although she will not be removing her clothes for the photographs.
Ms Loren puts her curves and complexion down to "a love of life, spaghetti, and the odd bath in virgin olive oil".
The screen icon has spoken about resisting pressure to have cosmetic surgery on her nose early in her career. Even the Archbishop of Genoa once observed that although the Vatican opposed human cloning, "an exception might be made in the case of Sophia Loren".
The Edinburgh-born television presenter Gail Porter, who recently suffered total hair loss due to alopecia, was listed tenth in the poll for being "comfortable with who she is" despite losing her hair. Ms Porter's hair began to fall out as she battled depression, which she is still being treated for.
She has said: "I get my good days and my bad days. One minute I can be absolutely fine, then I need to have a tissue for a minute. It started off as an illness and now it's a test. I have to find happiness within myself and know the people who accept me for who I am."
However, she added that it could be much worse. "I know I haven't got cancer, I know it's just hair, but it's something I've got used to."
Second place went to heart-throb George Clooney, followed by the Welsh opera-turned-pop-star Charlotte Church. Catherine Zeta Jones is fourth, followed by actors Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet and Gwyneth Paltrow.
An online poll asked 1,578 people for their verdict on the world's most naturally beautiful, for The Dare To Be Bare Awards for celebrities who do not conform to stereotypes. This article:http://living.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=1180722006
La Loren is just too much, what a beautiful creature!!
She really had an impact on her male generation...
I remember my boyfriend's father who would drive me around from Rome to Napoli and he would say things like this road is even curvier than La Loren and would stay like dreamy for a few second, he was just a great man il cavaliere Lucciano.
She's something Italian cinema should be thankful for.
