David Jones blames poor sales as fashion alliance with Alex Perry unravels

What began as a fashion marriage made in monochrome heaven is ending in a designer divorce.

When Alex Perry joined David Jones in 2007, the high-profile designer closed the department store's fashion show with a black and white houndstooth gown that left no doubt he was a DJs man after defecting from rival department store Myer.

But - six years later - David Jones is ditching Perry due to poor sales, just months after Perry sat in the front row at Myer's fashion collections launch in August.

''Our decision not to renew our contract with Alex Perry when it expires is based on the declining sales of this brand over the past few years,'' said Donna Player, group executive of merchandise at David Jones.

On Friday, David Jones sent a letter to Perry advising him it would be deleting his brand from August next year, when the existing contract expired.

David Jones claims Perry's sales at the department store have dropped by 10.3 per cent over the past three financial years, as DJs' overall Australian designer sales have increased by more than 27 per cent.

Perry's sales last year were much less than the $4 million to $5 million generated each year by other Australian designers in the David Jones stable, with some brands turning over close to $10 million.

''Whilst we wish Alex Perry all the best, we are a publicly listed company and we have a responsibility to our shareholders to … delete non-performing brands and reallocate the space to new brands and high-performing brands,'' Ms Player said.

Some industry insiders believe Perry lost touch with his core fashion business due to a hectic roster of television appearances and other projects, including roles on the television shows Australia's Next Top Model and Project Runway, designing a sunglasses and opticals range for Specsavers and serving as ''creative director'' for a range of Alex Perry Residential apartment buildings in Brisbane.

Perry is also an Electrolux ambassador, a MasterCard ambassador for the tennis in Melbourne and has created a range for Magnolia Silver Jewellery.

David Jones attempted to help Perry expand his fashion business by supporting the designer's diversification into corporate wear last year but the line failed to take off.

Matters came to a head after Perry's appearance at the Myer collections launch, after which he approached David Jones about the terms he wanted in order to renew his supply contract with the department store. The negotiations were not successful.

Perry said on Friday that he had not heard from David Jones until that day, having sent the department store a letter in September requesting new terms for his contracts.

''It's taken them three months to respond to my letter and there are some serious [issues] that I wanted to address, so to hear the news from you is delightful,'' Perry told Fairfax Media on Friday.

When asked if he was jumping ship to Myer, Perry said: ''I can't answer that right now. I've got several options but David Jones is not the best place for me in terms of my brand any more.''

Perry said the department store had failed to support a new, more youthful direction for his brand, which had recently picked up 40 new stockists in Europe.

''We've had unprecedented growth when other brands have been going under but David Jones didn't embrace the younger market I began pursuing last season,'' he said.

The exit of Perry will enable David Jones to reallocate his floor space to Australian designer Martin Grant, who lives in Paris and has just been signed by the department store, as well as two high-performing brands, Rachel Gilbert and Camilla World.

How awkward. I think it's bad news for the show because it probably means (with Alex Perry as a judge) AusNTM is going to stick with Myer and unlikely to go back to David Jones again, especially when they part ways with such unpleasant terms. And that probably means we're stuck with Jenbot as host from now on (since Jenbot is Myer ambassador), who is without any real fashion expertise, totally unproductive and unable to give any real advice to the girls. Her only saving grace is that, she does not seem to be bias. But, honestly, my chair can do that (no bias!). What’s the point of having her except to deliver a couple of lines every episode?

And I don’t know whether it’s coincidence or not, but when the show is with David Jones, we used to have real castings with designers, and real runway jobs in fashion week! While in Season 8, the girls only met “one” designer, and the designer was only mumbling comments that only she and Jenbot can hear. No real advice to the girls or specific comments to the camera. What’s the point, except to showcase her own designs?

I like Alex Perry as a judge and hope he carries on. But for some reason, he is not as straightforward and willing to call the girls out as he used to be. He used to call out girls for gaining weight on the show and being too short. He used to measure them and tell them they need to tone up to fit the sample size, otherwise they are not going to book jobs. But now all of a sudden it does not matter? How disappointing.

The show used to have great winners. Gemma Sanderson (S1) is still one of the top earning e-commerce models, eight years after she won, working non-stop in the UK even today. Alice Burdeu (S3) is the first ever top model success story. Tahnee Atkinson (S5) is quite successful as a lingerie model, and runner up Cassi Van Den Dungen just got Calvin Klein exclusive. Amanda Ware (S6) has consistent flow of international work. And Montana Cox (S7) has multiple Chanel runway appearances, Lanvin eyewear campaign and is David Jones youth ambassador.

It’s in such context that I’m so disappointed in S8. Right now the show seems to be concerned about selling the Myer brand than to help the girls to grow and develop as models. Hopefully they can pick it up next season.

Charlotte Dawson found dead in her inner-Sydney home
Police say there are no suspicious circumstances around the death of the former judge of Australia’s Next Top Model
The television personality and former model Charlotte Dawson has been found dead inside her inner-Sydney apartment.

The New Zealand-born celebrity, 47, had a history of depression and made headlines in 2012 when she was admitted to St Vincent’s Hospital after being tormented by the bullying of Twitter trolls.

A police spokesman confirmed a woman’s body had been found just after 11.15 on Saturday morning at an address in Woolloomooloo and that there were no suspicious circumstances.

The former controversial judge on Australia’s Next Top Model had also been the fashion editor for Woman’s Day and style editor for New Idea. She was also an influential campaigner against bullying and for greater health care and awareness.

She had been married to the former Olympic swimmer Scott Miller.

Some of those who had worked closely with her over the past 20 years told Fairfax Media of the person they knew as much more than a blonde media celebrity.

Ben Fordham, who worked with Dawson at Channel Nine, said she was “outrageous, outgoing and outspoken”.

“More than anything she was an outstanding human being,” Fordham said, highlighting her passion and persistence when campaigning for life-saving medical care for patients.

“She enlisted the help of people and ran a million miles an hour at it until the NSW health authority caved in and agreed to operate,” he said. “There’s no question those operations wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for Charlotte.”

Bauer executive and former magazine editor Deb Thomas met Dawson in the early ’90s. ‘'I’ve known her for a long, long time, I knew her in her early modelling days.

“She’s always been troubled, I have to say, she had some terrible things happen to her as a young girl.

“It’s such a tragedy for a beautiful young woman’s life to end in such sad circumstances when she had so much ahead of her.”

Foxtel’s executive director of television Brian Walsh knew Dawson for 15 years and worked with her on the network’s Australia’s Next Top Model.

“She was someone young girls looked up to, [they saw] her honesty, openness and vulnerability, which she wore in public,” Walsh said.

Fellow New Zealander Russell Crowe, who lived in the same apartment block in Woolloomooloo and who had been friends with Dawson since they were teenagers, was in a restaurant and broke down in tears when told of her death, according to news.com.au. He later tweeted: “Charlie D ... Just don’t understand.”

In an interview last year, Dawson spoke about her battles with depression.

Friends and celebrities went on Twitter to express their sorrow, including the New Zealand prime minister, John Key, who said he was “shocked” and “saddened” by her death.

Fellow television personality, Jessica Rowe, who has also spoken about her mental health issues, wrote: “Mental illness is a dirty, black dog and she did so much to help countless people.

I'm so sad she's passed away. She had so much sadness in her life, despite being such a vivacious, honest, caring person. I remember seeing her IRL at the finale of the last ANTM series and I was struck by how absolutely beautiful she was. I'm still finding it hard to believe that she's gone.

It looks like Melissa Juratowitch is no longer with IMG Australia. She's now with Pride Models:

Not surprised. It's just a reminder of how much of a let-down C8 is.
