"Jessica Stam was discovered in a local Tim Hortons coffee shop by Michèle Miller (an agent at the International Model Management agency in Barrie, Ontario) who found Stam on the way back from Canada's Wonderland (a theme park just outside Toronto).
She was discovered at the age of 14 when competing in an Irish dance competition. She went to Dixon Elementary school where she was enrolled in the French immersion program then transferring to Tomekichi Homma Elementary. Later, she went to continue her education in Hugh McRoberts Secondary School. Agent Charles Stuart approached her and asked her if she would consider modeling for him. At that point, she had never thought of modeling before. When she did begin to model, her knowledge of fashion was limited.[2] She eventually gained insight into the fashion world after her best friends crammed in fashion study sessions in between studying for exams
But everything began after a friend and photographer, Igor Vishnyakov, took photos of her. He knew she had something special, so he then gave them to IMG and her career took off. Before this, she was studying art history at Russian University for the Humanities
A chance encounter began her modeling career when she was fourteen. She was walking through the streets of Soho after a hamburger with friends when scout-turned actor Benjamin Hart approached her. Cole ran, fearing she was being chased by 'some dodgy guy' but after being asked to consider modeling, she accepted and was signed on with Storm Models, the mother agency of supermodels such as Kate Moss.
In 1966, Nigel Davies noticed the young Lesley Hornby (*Twiggy's real name) and offered her a modelling contract. She was only 16 and weighed 6½ stone (41 kg, 90 lbs).[4] Davies advised her to go by her childhood nickname, Twiggy, and renamed himself Justin de Villeneuve. After sweeping England as "The Face of '66" when her modelling pictures, taken by Barry Lategan, were made public, Twiggy arrived in New York in March 1967.
Moss was discovered at the age of 14 by Sarah Doukas (the founder of Storm Model Management) in 1988, at JFK Airport in New York City, after a holiday in the Bahamas. Moss's career began when Corinne Day shot black and white photographs of her, styled by Melanie Ward, for British magazine The Face when she was 15, in a photo shoot titled "The Third Summer of Love". Moss then went on to become the anti-supermodel of the 1990s in contrast to the supermodels of the moment, such as Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, and Naomi Campbell, who were known for their curvaceous and tall figures.
Daria Werbowy had never seriously considered modeling, but found herself launched into the business after meeting a schoolmate's mother who headed Toronto's Susan J. Model & Talent Management. At age 14, Werbowy won a national modelling contest,[1] but after a year of working with Susan J. Model & Talent, however, Werbowy thought she could be doing more with another agency and left.[citation needed]
After switching over to Elite Models, Werbowy began landing several prominent bookings in Canada but still had not achieved much international success. When Elite Canada's head scout, Elmer Olsen, started his own agency Werbowy followed and her career began to flourish. Within a few years, and under the guidance of International Management Group (IMG), Werbowy had gained a foothold on the international modelling stage. Daria has considered quitting the industry when she turns 25, to become a professional painter, or to open her own gallery, back home in Mississauga, Ontario
Her mother also believed she would one day become a model and constantly urged her to send photos of herself to modelling agencies and told her every day that someday she'd be famous. She was first discovered by Boss Models at the age of 16 and has since made quite an impact on the world of modeling.
Deyn's working life started serving part-time aged 13, at a fish and chip shop in Ramsbottom. In 1999, she won the Rossendale Free Press "Face of '99" competition, aged just 16.[7] She then moved to London, working in a fast-food restaurant during the day and a bar at night but admits: “It didn’t quite work.”[8] During this time she says she was also at college in Hull, studying drama and music. She was signed up by Models 1 when she visited the agency, and apparently slammed down a portfolio and refused to leave until she was signed.

At the beginning of her career she was rejected by numerous agencies, such as Elite Model Management, for being "too average and common" looking. In spite of that she did not abandon her dream of becoming a model .
I find that so ironic because she's the complete opposite. I don't think she is common looking.
