Showcard ConFUSION (hehehe)

Ok can somone clarify this for me?

What happens to those models who are signed to an agency but don't get a showcard?
Does it mean they are not expected to walk or can't walk in any shows for Fashion Week? Does it mean they don't have the backings of their agency for the season?
I've never truly understood it.....say for example 50 models signed to an agency yet the agency does cards for only 10 girls. Why? What is it that truly determines who gets these 'coveted' cards?

TIA

Could be for a number of reasons a girl does not get a showcard from her agency.

She isn't in town (ie she is from Sweden and her agency or the girl does not think it is worth it to fly to New York, or maybe she will debut in another city, or she could just be busy with other things like school/jobs).

She is still in development and her agency does not think the timing is right for her launch, they want to develop her book, etc.

The girl was working towards a runway season, but the agency felt she just wasn't quite ready (maybe her book is lacking or maybe her measurements aren't where her agency feels will make her competitive). Top agencies only want to put their best prospects in their showcards.

She has something major down the pipeline and her agency wishes to keep her from being overexposed, or wishes to keep her presence low-key (to be honest this one I'm not too sure how that works..)

Or like Supreme, I think they shoot their showcards far in advance of the shows, and many of their new faces have recently been signed and were not signed/in town when the shooting took place.

And there could be many more.. maybe TFS members with more knowledge into the industry can add/clarify with further information

Yes, what you said Charlotte, the agency could send out 100 cards with some mediocre girls in there, but that would piss casting directors off, and it makes the agency look sloppy, so its edited to the best girls for the shows for that season, not all girls on an agency's board are perfect for shows and the look changes also, and they don't want to put out a card and have the girl not do well (shows are just one part of the work available to models.)

They will still push a girl on their books who they didn't give a showcard, maybe she is a bit shorter or something,or a bit commercial(but still great for editorial , campaignn or advertising work) for a particular show where they think the designer will really like her look and send them to some show castings, without throwing them in the shark pool, which could affect their campaign editorial bookings

Trump's are up online, and let me just sum it up in one word (especially for a certain model): FIERCE. It's a very well-edited group.

Sometimes yes sometimes no

Remember Toni when she was on worldwide exclusive, even Joy Milan gave her a showcard eventhough obviously she would not be doing any shows in Milan (she could only do the Calvin Klein show in NY).

Also Ymre got a showcard from ONE last season eventhough it was later revealed she did not even step foot in New York City. Not sure exactly what happened there, but I'm guessing ONE was just looking to add some luster to their roster.

The show cards promote the agency too (though the girls pay for them) and it's good to brag. An exclusive must not be overlooked while she is not available.
