^^ I can't see Lea Michele as a model. To me she photographs very poorly overall.
![]() I don't think it's the same to pop in for a shoot or three in Paris or New York in between filming movies or television projects from time to time and to actively seek work as a photographic and/or catwalk model and professionally develop yourself as one. Keira Knightley, Scarlett Johansson and co. may have landed several ad campaigns and editorials in their careers, but imo it has more to do with their celebrity and beauty, as revered by the media, than any particular ability they might have as models (which "models" like them in fact often lack). Certainly there are plenty of actors and actresses to choose from in Hollywood, but the truth is the entertainment media likes to make superstars out of select "exquisite" beauties on the rise by putting them on a pedestal of their own at the same time as many of these people also like to profile themselves as such, and as Hollywood in particular has succeeded quite well in establishing itself worldwide as a synonym for film (and fame - as opposed to e.g. the "nameless" fashion industry and its own models, most of which you will not have heard of if you don't take a particular interest in the industry), you just can't make the argument that e.g. Scarlett Johansson's name and repute beauty did not weigh heavily in the decision to cast her as the face of Louis Vuitton. Certainly it is employing their beauty to promote a product, be it a magazine or a handbag, but even more so and I dare say crucially it is taking advantage of the tendency of the public to notice and take a liking to/interest in a familiar face. Finally, ad campaigns and editorials are to actors first and foremost a way to further themselves as actors, thus ultimately having rather little to do with 'modeling', and for me personally, no amount of big ad campaigns or editorials will make Scarlett Johansson a 'model', certainly not one to be taken seriously. (Not to pick on Scarlett in particular here; I'm only using her as an example.) Didn't Diane model as Diane Heidkrüger, though, before going into acting? Absolutely agree on the previously mentioned: • Christina Ricci (!!!) • Eva Green • Tilda Swinton • (And as much as I hate to admit it, Avril Lavigne does have a stunning profile.) Maybe: • Keira Knightley - very, very beautiful, but doesn't always have a handle on her facial expressions • Natalie Portman - see Keira Knightley. Also want to mention here, - Chloë Sevigny: has an interesting and unique look which there definitely is a market for + she has an amazing body and is incredibly (!!!) photogenic. Can also work a lot of different styles. (Some sources refer to her as a "former model" but imo that's exaggerating it quite a bit.) ![]() - Gemma Arterton: a classic beauty, but with a look far more versatile than you might expect. ![]() and - Liv Tyler, who however has "modeled" in the past and has the height, so I don't know if she counts here. Is irrefutably stunning nonetheless and I really wish she did more serious editorial work. Images from: wireimage.com; chloe-sevigny.org; gemma-arterton.net |
