it's called the neighborhood watch commitee ...or something like that...they are practically militant and have gotten half of tribeca designated as landmark, so not much can change...they are no joke and not to be messed with...

luckily, my block was designated as a landmark district last year, being that it is part of the original 'little italy'...

Well, I think CBGB's is safe....for now...I hope
Though Coney Island High (much to my dismay) is now an NYU dorm.

Yeah, the NWC is pretty 'militant'

But i like my neighborhood (Tribeca) and wouldn't like to see much change.

I agree with those who believe that SoHo's spirit has now moved to Chelsea.

I've not been to New York for about four years, I can't believe that Canal Jeans has gone - it was those kind of scruffy stores that made soho.

This kind of thing happens everywhere though - I used to live in Notting Hill (London) in the early nineties and for me, its now ruined, the kooky shops have closed, it is full of samey coffee bars and is inhabited by the super rich.

But the cool people move on - Brick Lane is hip now - where is hip in NY?

I was there two days ago. The Tribeca area and Thompson street are pretty unharmed but the rest was awful; it makes me really sad that I never got to see Soho in it's prime. My generation only knows the Soho that Looks like Disney, tastes like Coke, and smells like crap.
