London - Primark opens

I don't mind primark, good for practical bits.
I have to be in the right mood to go in there though, to trall through the clothes and not react to been pushed about by crazed bargin hunters.

I find that their men's clothes are far too big.I bought a small black polo shirt and it sagged realy badly. Other than that when i do go in, i find tht their clothes are so poorly made. The fabrics are uncomfortable. Screw Primark and their highstreet domination

I like Primark, I shop at the peckham primark, and you have to have nerves of steel to go there, but I'm a student so cheap clothes are good clothes. I'll go look at the new store, it'll be horribly busy all the time, so no different from anywhere else on oxford street!!

I also heard an article on radio 4 about the shop, and apparently they have factories in Scotland, and do source cheap labour, this article was from a year ago so maybe things have changed!

People should start to think about where their shopping comes from!!!

I loathe Primark and I cannot for the life of me understand the "urge" to go out and buy 20 tops for 5 quid!!

I mean.. if you think a little you would know where this stuff comes from.

Stop supporting sweat shops.. it's up to us as consumers to get to know these things!

Sorry for the rant! I hate Primark..ugh.. it's like a fleamarket, and the quality is so cheap I don't see anything positive with it.

We used to have one Primark in Glasgow, now we have two. As much as I hate the 'old' one, the new one is an absolute success. The shop is spacious, tidy (yes tidy) and I guess they've tried to make big efforts to appear less 'cheap'. The quality is very uneven. You still get those nasty cheap badly cut stuff but I have seen a real improvement since last year with really decent stuff. As for the 'sweatshop' concern, most of the HS shops do the same. For instance, considering how badly the quality has gone at Topshop (with still the same prices if not higher), I actually think at least Primark is not taking the pxxxx at the customers. You pay exactly for what it is...cheap quality in complete awareness.

I am getting soo tired of this Primark BS!

My friend was going on today about how she bought a pair of jeans for £4! WTF! I have over 25 pairs, and my 'cheapest' will be couple of £40 ones from Topshop and Cheap Monday, everything else is premium denim (i'm 5'10 and a size 24/25 its hard to find good ones that fit right).

No, I am not advocating fashion snoberry, and though I can afford to buy nice things, I think you should buy things you like... That fit your style, whether its from Chloe or Zara, as opposed to poser losers who buy things that scream logo! .

BUT.

PRIMARK (and all the others asda/tesco etc) is a joke. I cannot see how it is ethically possible for anyone to sell jeans for £4! Apart from all the obvious bad quality reasons, how much exactly do you think the people who make these clothes get paid?

Poor children in third world countries working their *** off so you can buy disposable 'bargain' fashion... Buy quality timeless pieces, if you want 'disposable' go to H&M for gods sake.

Some might argue that even the biggest brands still run sweat shops... Yes, a lot of them do (I wrote a long *** research paper on this), but at least they get paid even if it's just a bit more than the pennies Primark workers do.

Even the shop floor people look miserable.

Its possible to produce a pair of jeans for less than £4!! A lot of clothes that are sold in Zara also come from developing countries. Whose to know what the standards in these factories are for sure? You can find Zara clothes in export surplus stores in the countries where they are made. They sell for as low as £3.

Its easy to say that children in developing countries shouldnt work - but it can sometimes also be the fine line between survival and death for them.

In developing countries - the goal is to ideally stop child labour. But nobody can stop them from working to just keep alive. That's a point where no law can intervene to stop them for working...even if they are children.

Sad but true.

remember primark dotn advertise or do press releases etc. its all word of mouth .. they save money there.. and the bags are so plain and boring save more money there .. and the fact everyone shops there.. economies of scale etc. they can afford to lower the prices.. not all of its unethical

Thanks for your post kytila, I agree 100% if people continue to shop there it just shows that it's "ok" for the business to operate in this way, I think it's up to us to say no.

And most of the people that shop there are young consumers that actually can afford to shop somewhere else they are just driven by this trendy quick fix of something.
