Great Expectations International Trailer #1 (2012) Mike Newell Movie HD

Looks like a must-see.. these adaptations never get old for me, everyone has their take on those classics and I like that this looks closer to how I actually imaged the story in the book but more exuberant somehow, and just seeing Helena and Ralph is almost guarantee that it will be worth watching.

That said, nothing can beat Cuarón's adaptation from 1998 for me, it oddly sums up a decade (the 90s), the way he 'crafted' the entire film is quite sensual, loved how he portrays the American south and despite all these alterations, he still managed to keep the story and inner ghosts of the characters intact. One of my all-time favorites I recently realised.. the more I watch it, the more I love it and feel identified with both the characters and how he modified the physical elements of the story. :heart:

While I think it definitely looks like it's worth watching, I do sometimes get annoyed that there are SO many adaptations of the same books. Note to filmmakers: There are some other classic novels out there that have never had big screen treatment. Why not look to some of those? Like instead of the 15th adapatation of Jane Eyre, maybe they could take a shot at Vilette? Instead of another adaptation of Great Expectations try to bring Bleak House to the big screen (aside from a 1920 sildent adaptation it's only been done on TV). Or look to authors like Elizabeth Gaskell, Anthony Trollope, Wilkie Collins....

People are constantly complaining that Hollywood is out of ideas which is why they tackle the same things over and over again. That's not necessarily true. There's a ton of great stuff out there that's been ignored so they can readapt Pride and Prejudice for the umpteenth time.

That's not to say a good adaptation of a classic isn't alway welcome. Of course it is. If a filmmaker has a new angle to explore they should go for it by all means. But not to the exclusion of all the other great books out there that deserve a shot onscreen!
