Diana Vreeland - Editor

an unconventional fashion icon...i admire her, there is so much strength and sharpness and wit alone in her looks...let alone what she did.

awesome

a giant in us fashion journalism and life-as-art

Lena 26-12-2004 04:18 AM

she's my all time super diva..
i dont think anyone will ever surpass her unconventional style or her ability breaking up with establishment 'ideas' on what is chic
Vreeland transformed forever out view on what is modern,
reading her books is a must for stylists, designers, photographers, make up artists

thanks for bringing this in AnnaK.. great topic

a little anecdote: "on one occasion a brave journalist asked her, “Mrs. Vreeland, is that fact or fiction?” After a small pause she replied, “It’s faction”. "

and a quote i really like:"Elegance is innate. It has nothing to do with being well dressed. Elegance is refusal."

Once upon a time Vogue America kicked ass: A Tribute to DIANA VREELAND

Those good old days... will never come back (aparently)

DIANA VREELAND: A legend, a myth, mother of style
What Suzy Menkes is to fashion journalism, La Vreeland was to an editor in chief: A MODEL.

She recognized Edie Sedgwick's youthquaker-potential, she gave Penelope Tree a chance, she made American Vogue a fetish mag.

What do you think of Diana Vreeland?
If she were in charge of American Vogue right now (with a little help of the Time Machine, of course), how would her work look like???

IMO, she would straight to the underground (not grunge) side of America, mixing it with Contemporary Art , shaking it with a shot of independent cinema & Modern Litterature.... And, Beyonce, Christina, Angelina and Gwen would go back where they belong to: GQ, Sports Illustrated, Rolling Stone, InStyle... hehe

hugobossdaria 31-03-2005 10:59 PM

vogue us probably would have better covers

arlekindearrabal 31-03-2005 11:09 PM

oh, american vogue and its dreadful, bland, uninspiring covers... maybe we should just resign and see this as an italian vogue time, even though lately its been slipping, that "hollywood real style" editorial was just too great

Forget Vreeland. I'd vote for a return to the days of Edna Woolman Chase. Now there was a character. The magazine was very arty under her. That's back when they had the marvelous art-deco covers and Salvador Dali-directed photoshoots and all sorts of amusing cultural bits and pieces.

TokyoVogue 31-03-2005 11:44 PM

Wow, i would have never guessed Vogue was at one point that culturally conscious...and if i ever see Beyonce on the cover...

lots of people say that best times of vogue were when diana was editor. I'd say Yes and I'd say NO. What would you say?

Lena 19-07-2005 04:04 AM

i'd say totally..
creativity was running totally wild, she was pushing everyone around her to be even 'more' creative.. and that was like 50 years ago..
in contrast, today's magazines are totally predictable, its like five steps back..
editorials look more like fashion catalogues than anytime before.. ocassionally we see a decent editorial and we praise it as if it was a masterpiece (it IS understandable) but this is due to fashion imaging levels going real low.

DV was totaly ahead of her time..
compaired with CarlaS' direction at Vogue Italia (not to say..CarineR does for Vogue Paris) she remains more modern and creative for todays standards.
