Do men wear vintage ?

Never heard of any store selling vintage for men ? Is men's fashion history not old enough to have vintage ?

daworth 27-01-2005 03:43 PM

Wah? I'm confussed. I thought vintage just meant clothing from previous generations. Does it have a different meaning than the term Vintage used in say a vintage clothing shop?

Cause there are scores of "vintage" stores all over America, selling clothes generally from the 50's through 80's. Including men's, but this might not be what you mean.

Sure, boxma. There are several vintage stores for men in NYC, doing quite well.

yes I'm not sure what you're asking...but mens vintage clothing is just as common as women's vintage. just like women who wear vintage, it's up to the guy's personal style as to how much he wears. my brother's wardrobe is almost entirely vintage! faust is right, there are plenty of places that sell vintage for men.

boxma 27-01-2005 03:52 PM

so what are they selling in these vintage stores ? In women's fashion, people collect coutures of famous designers, precious fabrics, accessories etc etc. What are mens vintage items ?

PrinceOfCats 27-01-2005 03:55 PM

There are famous men's designers too...

^ ditto...just as sure as they made designer clothes for men 50 years ago, they also passed those clothes onto the second-hand circuit, to be circulated just like women's clothes. I go vintage shopping for my brother a lot, and they sell the usual range of mens clothes in vintage shops - ranging from high end designer clothes to random one-offs.

faust 27-01-2005 04:08 PM

Well, the term vintage has become so loose...

I've come across everything from Matsuda to Carol Christian Poell...

Plenty of stores sell vintage clothing for men.

Of course there is vintage for men. One big vintage item currently making its way back into young men's street wardrobes: The suitcoat blazer, seen over jeans and rock and roll t-shirts after being banished from the under 30s wardrobe during most ofthe 90s as "too 80s" and even suits, dressed up for work, or punked out for evening. The trick is to find custom tailored pieces that FIT the new wearer. It is kind of like getting ghosts' clothes. Also currently on display on men's vintage racks: 70s print disco shirts. A sexy silky dressy unusual graphic print shirt for a festive night out is a hole in many men's current wardrobes, because the industry has currently forgotton how a man wants to dress to impress and be sexy on a date.

you're concept of vintage mens clothing seems like it may be off slightly.

vintage clothing for men these days is like a dirty looking thin kitschy teeshirt and some old levis

http://www.inanyc.com The most famous one.

http://www.rag-nation.com This one is not a store, but you can visit the showroom based on what you see on the website.

Non-designer:

Cheap Jack's - Bway/14th
What comes around goes around - W.Bway + Grand
Alice's Underground - Bway/Grand (somewhere in that area)

Acid 28-01-2005 11:15 AM

everywhere here that sells vintage womens, sells mens also

softgrey 28-01-2005 11:16 AM

i don't consider ina or rag-nation vintage...but more thrift or used or second hand...
ina barely has anything more than 3-5 yrs old...

but the others that faust mentioned are the ones i regularly recommend...
there are a lot more in the east village and the lower east side...
