I've herd that theory too.
It's a pretty good theory as well, but I do agree, Frankenstein doesn't really seem to fit in that sort of world, though they do seem to have several literary character's from the 18th/19th century, like with Alice in Wonderland...so who knows? But the one thing is, if he was Frankenstein, it would have been a nice tip of the hat to have his name something to do with Mary Shelley instead. Though that might have made it more obvious. Other people seem to think that it relates to Herman Melville's Moby Dick, but I personally doubt that. Or that he could be a character from the sea, like King Triton.
But who know's...Dr. Whale might not end up being any of those guesses either...
