I couldn't speak to fashion in particular, as I'm not in the industry.
In most competitive fields, it's usually a combination of very hard work, networking skills, and aggressiveness in putting yourself forward.
It's the aggressiveness that usually gets a woman called "bitch." Because good little girls are supposed to be modest and self-effacing, right?
