Providing the source/credits for an image or news story

Extract from the Community Rules:

Gossip is hearsay and these forums are dedicated to providing credible information to its members. Therefore, we ask our members to have reliable sources for any information which they may provide.
  1. Please remember to provide the source for an image or news story you share with us here. Journalists and photographers deserve credit for their work, just as those who take the time to scan in images from magazines or newspapers do. We want to continue to enjoy news stories and images and do not want people/company/websites upset with us and therefore prohibiting us from doing so.
General

All credits need to be visible – making credits in white that make it harder for the moderators to see is not acceptable.

If you forget to credit your pictures, you can edit your post to include credits within 10 minutes of having posted.

If that time has passed, you will have to make a new post stating which post number you are crediting.

Please do not post links in credits - Please name the site where you found the images. Site names need to be spelled out in full ... and if the extension is not ".com" please add the extension (for example, ".it" or ".net", etc.). Clickable urls (eg: urls that contain http://) and/or links in lieu of a site name are not acceptable.

***EDITED September 2009***
Facebook private pictures or any private picture from any social network may be removed without any further explanation.

Crediting Do’s and Don'ts:

Pictures

Please do not use-

“Picture from her/his thread”– tFS does not own any pictures posted on the forum, therefore using threads as a source is an invalid form of crediting

"Picture originally posted by so and so" - unless the picture is a personal picture or a scan (in which case you will have to list more information as listed below under Scans) this form of credit will be considered invalid.

“Pictures from google.com” etc – Google is a search machine, and search machines cannot be used as credit (In the case of google, the site/s that should be credited are listed below the search results pictures).
By the same token 'Yahoo' is not allowed (Yahoo has a search machine - images.search.yahoo.com/). If you have gathered the pictures form Yahoo News or music.yahoo.com etc, you must list that as your credit.

“Pictures from my HD / Hard Drive /Computer /Desktop, etc” – unless we’re talking your own personal holiday pictures, pictures of yourself, your purchases, etc., you cannot used your hard drive as credit.

"Pictures from my photobucket / imageshack etc" - Your photobucket and your imageshack are not valid as credit as they are just a place to upload your pictures and do not in any way make you the creditable source for the picture.

Abbreviations - Many members do not know what the abbreviations stand for. Only those "in the know" will understand the reference. Simply posting an abbreviation as credit thus negates the purpose of posting credits.

Account names to images from flickr, deviantart, myspace , etc. have to be added. - Flickr/deviantart/myspace etc users deserve credit maybe even more than established and well-known sites. Please keep this in mind when saving/uploading images from these sites.

Scans

It is not enough to post “scanned by me”
  • Please add the name of the magazine/book from which the scan was made, in the case of magazines please add the publishing time(year)/month/edition,
  • Additionally, to help your fellow members in their searches, it would be very helpful if, in the case of editorials that you mention the name of the editorial, the photographer/stylist/make up artist/model etc that were involved in the editorial.
Screen shots

It is not enough to post “screen shot by me”

- Please add the film/TV program etc from which the shot was taken.

Animated GIFs

It is not enough to post “GIF by me”

- Please add the source of the video from which the GIF was made, e.g. youtube, ftv.

Articles/Text

When crediting an article or some form of text, please include as much information as possible
  • The site from which the article/text was taken,
  • if possible the name of the author, publishing time/date/edition. Adding this kind of information also assists other members in locating the article/text when doing a search.

Material you want to share but don’t have the source for

The only way to share it is by posting a link to the picture. NOT the actual picture itself. That way tFS is not responsible for the lack of crediting in any way.

**Our mods try their hardest to check posts for follow up credits, however, sometimes they miss them and delete pictures. If that happens, please don’t bite the mods. This is a labor of love and we all deserve the same respect you’d want to be shown yourself.
