Grace Jones Rules at NYC Nightclub Fete

By Godfrey Deeny
October 27, 2003

Nobody makes a better entrance than Grace Jones.

Some 50 policemen forced organizers to stop a crowd ten times as large entering Hudson Studios, as impassioned fans attempted to cry, yell, beseech and beg their way into a stealth performance by Grace Jones in Manhattan Saturday night.

Attired in her own purple headdress, Grace Jones arrived at the party “Nightclub in the Sky,” sponsored by AX Armani Exchange and ever hip Paper magazine, atop a white Bentley that was entered into the building and rode up in a truck elevator up to the Hudson studios.

Her entrance was video projected in the lofty space overlooking the Hudson River, packed with Jason Lewis, Yoko Ono, Jordana Brewster, Aida Turturro, Barbara Bush,??? Samantha Mathis, Diana Brill, Ray Liotta, Maxwell, Amanda Hearst, Cynthia Rowley, Susanne Bartsch, Richie Rich, Coco Brandolini, Moby, Mos Def and Bai Ling.

“If you don’t scream for me I’ll get on a fu…ing plane and go back to London!” * spat out a fiercely flame-eyed Jones to a crazed audience of 1,000.

Singing her classic version of "Slave to the Rhythm," Grace careened around the tiny stage. She did a lightning costume change, and reappeared to sing "My Jamaican Guy" and "Pull Up to the Bumper." *

No one enjoys attention more than Jones. During a recent stay in Manhattan’s Mercer Hotel, the singer, who lives in the UK, elected to come down to the lobby dressed just in eight-inch heels, bra and panties and enjoy some cocktails.

Billed as a celebration of New York nightlife, the party also featured the Godfather of House Frankie Knuckles, whose high-energy spinning had Maxwell dancing on tables and an assortment of groovers furiously getting down.

“We wanted to re-create the decadence of a certain moment in New York,” explained Paper’s impresario Hunter Hill. They succeeded.
