Eurasian Melange, I wonder if your problem is caused by the environment, as you mentioned. While you say the problem is as likely to occur in the summer as it is in the winter, it’s important to remember that just about any weather (and the heating or air conditioning therein) can affect the hydration of the skin: If this is the case, your lips are likely to rapidly lose water during the daytime.

Currently, you are using lip balms by Vaseline, Burt’s Bees, and Nivea. From what I know of these products, they are experts in replacing the oil your lips would lose during the day, but not the water. That may be why you don’t seem to get much benefit from them during the day.

If I were you, I’d track down a lip balm that contains a higher level of glycerine or any other water-replacement ingredient. Clinique’s Superbalm range is great.
