I agree that not lowering standards is the key to shopping sales...all the better if you know the exact item that you want and can avoid getting distracted.
On another topic...I was in Paris a few weeks ago and made an observation that made me think of this thread. Every time I saw a really chic woman, I noticed that her clothes didn't look brand new. They looked worn, not in the sense of worn out or old , but in the "these are my favorite things in the world, I love wearing them, and I'd rather wear this than anything else," sense. This air of comfort, which was so unbelievably cool, seems to be another, hugely positive upshot (style-wise) of having a little wardrobe...
It actually reminds me of something Yohji says in Notebooks, implying that clothes should be mutually identifiable with their owner...."you see John's coat, and you happily say, oh, that's John," or something like that.
