As someone who has already spent two years studying fashion design, and is strongly considering two more, I'd say that one year really isn't enough. In a way, if you aren't already passionate about designing, that first year is really when you figure out if it is for you. Plus, in my experience, the first year is the hardest because it's all about learning more than creating, learning to sew, learning to drape, learning to illustrate, learning to draft flat patterns....

But as everyone said, work experience is a whole different story, you learn things there that no ammount of classes can teach you.
