Actually, some designers do own the patterns and prints that they use. I know Diane von Furstenberg design prints in house, meaning some of them are original artwork owned by her company. And even if the designers aren't creating the prints, there are print makers and fabric mills that design them, so in the end somebody is getting ripped off.

And blatantly copying a design, regardless of how "overpriced" it might be, is still unethical. It's still stealing.
