Haha okay guys let's turn this in my special German class!
I don't know how to explain german grammar myself because I just use it without thinking about how it works (but I agree that it's quite complexe even for me).
Accusative is for the direct object, you're asking "Wen oder was?" (Who/whom or what).
Dative is "Wem oder was"? (Whom as in who..to or what).
That's the easiest way to differentiate them at least how I learneed it back then in 4th grade.
