I hope people know that couture does not equate to big grand ball gowns and eccentric clothing.
What Karl does for Chanel, especially for his couture collections, is to implement the best and often time the most painstaking and time consuming clothes making techniques that anyone could do. Chanel has the best atelier in the world that consists of sewers and couturiers that have techniques that no other house in the world has.
When you look at Dior, the only "hard" part really about his couture collections is the fact that those overtly extravagant clothes are time consuming but aren't really necessarily harder to create compared to Dior ready-to-wear clothes.
I've always respected Karl, or atleast the Chanel brand, for keeping the utmost quality in their clothes even if it means comprising creativity in designs since really.... who exactly will wear half the clothes that most couturiers who continue to create all those so called "avante garde" clothes?
