I want to add a bit to this:

Consider McQ, when he came, he created designs that were nothing if not over-the-top, wild and attention grabbing, not to be forget totally impractical. However, we all loved them, because there were so refreshing. And I am willing to argue that was the whole purpose for McQ, to create something that would be attention grabbing.

Attention garbbing has its place but yes, as you say, there are certain individuals in our society, who are self-obsessed and 'attention whores' (such a crude work eh!). And the media (& society?) loves them.
