(an idea that begun on a thread about Christian Dior´s 100 anniversary)

well, it´s true!, a lot of people from this place thinks that Dior thanks to Galliano has become an empire of in a few words... p*rno crap, and some others still love his vision and creativity, but what about his early days at Dior, before the saddle bags and crystal mules?

I love what John does at Dior. The cheap and tacky accessories produced by Dior doesn't appeal to me. It's the fantasy and drama that he brings to the house that's really exciting. One of my favs is the chinoiserie inspired collection from fall 97

his earlier days were better creatively, his latter days better commercially, as a designer myself, I understand somewhat what he has to go through (although i cannot fathom the responsibilities of working for a multi-tiered fashion house, with the size and budget that dior has). designers are constantly pressured to be commercial and creative at the same time. we are also asked not to repeat ourselves, but not to change our look too drastically too quickly, there is no way to consistently do collections that everyone will always love. i think that his responsibilities at dior has now become-to keep the buzz around the house that will ultimately sell the products.(many of the stuff on the runway is not what is shown to the buyers to sell to thier customers, there is now at many fashion houses a runway collection and a selling/showroom collection).

I used to love John's worke...but lately he experimented tooo much . You have the feeling that he lost the control of his creation...there is almost no connection between the "old" and the "new" Galliano.

Just out of curiosity, where do you think the early days of Galliano end? I say pre-2000?

yeah, or maybe even around the 2001 but pre-2000 is more suitable :flower:

maybe :P, i wouldn´t know an exact date, but i think and in general before designers started showing all of her models with handbags and so on, when the clothing was the only thing to watch on the runway.

the idea i had for the thread is to post old pictures and editorial images for those who wanna take a look back and for those others that started following galliano not so long ago.

- a dress from his fall 97 rtw show
- a picture from his "giraffe necklace" and bangles inspired by the Massai tribes(rtw summer 98).
- a picture of a dress from his own collection from summer 98 (loved it and wanted to share it too)
