The Hat Thread

topshop is chock full of hats right now...
super trendy...

i'm going to have to come up with something for summer...
my wool felt isn't going to cut it when it's 90 degrees...
:ermm:...

and there are certain looks in my wardrobe that really just scream for a good hat right now...

i'd love something from borsalino...
but experience has taught me that straw hats get destroyed and it's hard for me to justify the pricetag on a borsalino unless it's wool...

anyone seen anything cute in straw?
maybe with a black band?

or maybe black cotton cargo cap?
or a black cotton fisherman's cap?
or whatever else works for summer...

there is just no way i am going to wear a baseball cap, no matter how trendy...

I think the prices of reinhard plank hats are not bad generally.
( also we'd see them on sale somewhere )

for example, the comme comme straw hat I'll post later is about 30000 yen
while rp straw hats over here are about 20000 yen.

btw, there is a thread for rp in the designers and collections forum, if you are interested.

thanks runner and lucy!
:flower:

all very nice...
the reinhard plank hats are so so lovely...
it's funny, it never occurred to me that a straw hat could be a colour...ha!
i always just pictured it natural straw...silly me!...
but the black is beautiful...
i suppose navy could be nice as well...

i will have a look at the reinhard plank thread and website as well...
i must become more familiar with these...

the comme hat is cute...but so costume-y, imo...
i prefer a turned down brim...
preferably something i can pull down over one eye...
for a sexy spy kind of effect...
:zorro:

i confess...
whenever i see those girls with the hats pushed back on their heads all i can thing of is bananarama and i started singing
*he used to be a shy boy...:innocent:

^_^

you mean the brim has to be totally turned down, all around the crown?

anyway, just remembered this cap from +noir S/S 2013
the khaki hat from YY pour homme S/S 07

yeah- i think maybe it does have to be down all around...
or at least in the front...

this is my idea of a cool way to wear a hat...
i know it's wintery...
but i basically want a summer version somehow...

in post #363 there is a hat that i open weave just as the comme comme hat is open weave...
i really like the idea of that...but i am not sure if it would be very stiff...
they usually are...and the brim cannot be molded the way i would like...
but that texture and weave is definitely something that draws me in an attracts me...

i always mold/block my wool hats using my steamer so that the brim does a sort of wave over one eye the way i like...(but it's harder to do with straw)
similar to some of the rhinehart plank hats...
some of them seem very good, imo...
but it is very hard to tell without trying on...
and i cannot find anyplace that sells them in nyc...

i think the colour of the men's YY hat is GORGEOUS!

since lucy posted the h&m pics---
i've been checking online and it seems every little chain store has got some hats now...
so i am going to go on a little hunt in soho and try some on...
they are all pretty basic from what i can tell,
but it should give me a better idea of what is working and what isn't
^_^

the brim on my olive hat, (which is currently my fave) is actually so wide...
much wider than a man's hat brim usually is...
i think it's how you can really tell that it's for a woman, even though it is styled like a man's hat...
it makes it a bit more glamourous...
sort of a seventies vibe, i think...
even though it's subtle, it's there...
tom ford would approve...
...

i've been told more than once by complete strangers that i look like a movie star when i wear it...
...
this makes me think that the last hat in post #363 could be very good...

but i also love the one next to it that is all scrunchy...
for a completely different look that is more deconstructed...
so many options!

the YY caps from nordic are really good too though...
i like the dark blue...
are they linen?

looks like there might be an adjustable strap in the back which is good!

thanks for finding all of these runner!

now I think I understand your idea of cool. that is actually a very cool image. it evokes something like this music:

ahh if you had been a boy scout you would have formed your hat with wax and an iron. and also, for some reason, the stiffer the hat was made like a plastic helmet, the cooler !

probably the YY caps are cotton. 15750 yen (sale price).
yes adjustable, sasuga captain

^^glad you like the image runner! and it's cool that it made you think of that music...
there is definitely a musical influence...
maybe this song is what the fashion editor had in her mind...
^_^

wax and iron?!
woah- that's cool...they definitely didn't teach that in the girl scouts...
...

so- after checking a bit and trying on some stuff, i think that, for me, a darker hat is best...
jcrew has a nice navy one (sold out of my size though!)
club monaco has a great one with a wired brim so it can be molded in a great way, but only a light colour...
argh!

arigato sensei!...so the YY cap IS adjustable!...
that seems pretty great...
is it men's or women's?

ahh alright I understand more accurately. somewhat less serious than the impression I originally got.
it looked like a scene where in the midst of a mission reason was trying to resist emotion.
the red on lips reveals her heart fluttering like a red butterfly.

those YY caps are mens from pour homme S/S 2012.
but I saw womens in that kind of style this spring in a YY femme store.
very similar or even the same model sized down to some extent maybe.

yes, in the context of the whole story (which i guess you have seen)..
that is exactly right as you describe...
i love the lips as well---sort of stained and sheer and glistening...
in anticipation of something- though we don't know exactly what...
it could be danger...or it could be a kiss...
:winkiss:

so there is another story (that is yet to be done) for which that particular pic is a starting point...
more of a sentimental journey...

hmmm...the women's might be good...
maybe it is part of the REGULATION collection?...
that seems possible, anyway...
i confess, i LOVE my Y's buckle cap and have worn it soo soo much...
it's amazing!
:blush::heart:

if it's anything like that then it should be pretty amazing as well, i would imagine...

sentimental journey.....as a musical influence that she have in her mind for the untold story ?
i hadn't realized that i had named another song, but i suppose that it was in my subconscious...
^_^...
what i mean is the story that the Paris Match tells...
Empty hours
Spent combing the street
In daytime showers
They've become my beat;
As I walk from cafe to bar
I wish I knew where you are;
Because you've clouded my mind
And now I'm all out of time
Empty nights with nothing to do
I sit and think, every thought is for you;
I get so restless and bored
So I go out once more;
I hate to feel so confined
I feel like I'm wasting my time
"i'm only sad, in a natural way...
and i enjoy, sometimes, feeling this way..."

this is a great line, imo - and many images come to mind...
all the locations...
wet cobblestone...empty doorways...smoky cafe...etc...

that's why i said 'sentimental journey'...
just walking...
sort of going nowhere except in one's mind/imagination/dreams...
thinking of a faraway love/romance...
(it's the thought of the kiss, rather than the danger---the other side of the story)

anyway-
back on topic...lol...

the store looks like an amazing place to visit...
thanks for the info and pics...
:flower:...

j'adore the paul harnden cap with the leather brim...
amazing amazing amazing...
thanks for sharing!...
