2014 BAFTA Awards

Why is it not appropriate? Because she's a woman and should only be confined to wearing a dress? If men can wear suits, why not women?

By that notion men should show up in ball gowns. Of course if they did they would also be considered inappropriately and even mockingly dressed for the occasion -- see the South Park creators at the Oscars that one year.

Angelina doesn't look bad obviously but she looks under-dressed compared to the other women.

Well, they did that for humorous effect. Hey, if a man wants to turn up in a ball gown, that's their prerogative... Those are typical societal double standards for you, I guess. Kind of reminds me of the film Ma vie en rose, and it's an interesting topic considering the recent news about Bruce Jenner allegedly "wanting to be a woman." But that's another story...

I will add this: Consider it from a female viewpoint, women were being told exactly what to wear for centuries. It's only in these past few decades, trailblazers like YSL, Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn have empowered women by breaking boundaries with womenswear. A woman wearing a suit actually represents something. Jolie is in a formal evening suit, I fail to see how she is underdressed.

imo Angelina looks too casual. It´s not that she´s wearing a suit it´s that she looks ready for the after party... Tilda often wears pants on the RC but she always looks polished.

I thought Angelina looked awesome and very sexy even though she was wearing... a suit. :o It's a formal occasion and it is a formal suit. There's nothing in the rule books that says women should only wear ball gowns and if there is, it should be torn up. It was perfectly tailored and the undone tie added a really nice touch.

what in the world is Lily Allen wearing and what was she thinking ?

Blazers and trousers have become standard fair for women in day-to-day life so it doesn't give a formal vibe on the red carpet and it certainly no longer makes some big gender statement. We've seen enough pant suits worn by women on the carpet over the years where it's no longer shocking or even interesting.

I completely disagree with this comment. It can still look fresh, and exciting, like it did tonight with Jolie and Ruth, loved their looks.

I happen to really love Angie's suit, it's understated but very classy looking. Perhaps she isn't as dolled up as some other women attending the BAFTAs but it doesn't really matter because she's carrying herself with poise and grace. And to me, those things matter more then if she's wearing a ballgown.

I love the suit Angelina's wearing. Sure a lot of women wore suits on red carpets over the years, but it can still look fresh and different. It depends on who is wearing it and what the suit looks like. Someone like Angelina can pull off a manly/womanly suit. I think it looks fantastic on her. Far from underdressed. I like how her and Brad match each other.

Lupita in that Dior dress!

Uma looks great even if the dress is a bit boring.

Well, I hope Angie doesn't get mistaken for the valet or catering staff at the after-party because, honestly, that's what she looks like.

Once again, Lupita sets the standards for true glamour on the carpet. I think she is working her way through the rainbow.

Agreed !
Lupita since the start of the award season has been contant in looking perfect on the red carpet.

Uma's look is a bit boring. A nice statement piece or a thing belt or something would make it less boring.

Angelina looks chic with her bow tie undone. That is what makes it stand out for me. Sarah Jessica Parker wore pants last year and looked great. I will admit that I do prefer that women wear gowns to the big four film awards.

Oprah is wearing Stella McCartney

I don't think there is much chance of anyone mistaking Angelina Jolie for the catering staff.
