(500) Days of Summer

I might be the only one who didn't think Summer was being a b*tch at all.

No, you're not :flower:. I posted something along the same lines about this a couple of pages ago. To briefly reiterate, I adored her character and I totally understand her need to feel unattached and free. In the scene at the bar early on in the movie when she's talking about how shes not comfortable being someone's "anything" etc, I felt like it could have been me talking. People keep going on about how she led him on, but she flat out told him she didnt want anything serious. Tom just kept seeing what he wanted to see.

I love the discussion of this movie.

Lots of my friends were upset by it. "Aw, poor Tom." But it's so real which is what a lot of people don't understand. The narrator made it clear: THIS IS NOT A LOVE STORY.

I also don't think Summer was a b*tch.

Remember guys, the movie is from Tom's perspective. He was hurt, so naturally, in his mind, he felt like she was being a b*tch even though she probably wasn't necessarily being one.

I don't understand the amount of hated for summer. She is very much a secondary character. She hasn’t been flushed out enough. This is a story very much about Tom and his need for love. The character of Summer was honest as she could have been with him and herself. She told him about being causal, not being his girlfriend and not promising him the security of knowing her feelings for him won’t change. I really like her honesty. He is the one that chose to not listen to her and not stand by his beliefs. Tom wanted more from Summer and she was starting to resent that. I think that was one of the reasons why she was hot and cold towards the end. Tom didn’t even realize they were fighting. And for her to say she was Sid. Says to me that she ended it before she could hate him.

If Summer was using Tom. Then I think Tom was using Summer too. TO prove to himself that love was there and Summer was the one. If Summer was jaded from her parents splitting up. Then Tom had a one sided view of what love is. From listening to British music and misinterpretation of the Graduate. Tom very much lives in his own head. He was using Summer to escape his boring and routine life. He thought that if he found the one, his life would some how be magically different. That can be very exhausting and time consuming. To pin all of your dreams into one girl. That is too much for Summer or any girl to live up to.

If you look closely Summer was really supportive of Tom. She wanted to know more about him as an architect, she would ask him about his dreams, letting him draw on her, and telling her friends what a great architect he could be.
What Tom learned was to go out and experience life. If you want the job, go and get it. If you want the girl, go and ask her out. He spent weeks staring, and stalking Summer. He took less than 5 minutes to ask Autumn out. Tom changed so much. And he wouldn't have met Autumn if he didn't quit his job.

this is how i think i should perceive summer and somehow i don't.this is the thing i think this movie is lacking in implying it more. there was one explanation from her and it was at the beginning when she stated she doesn't want anything serious, after that, the only fight they've gotten into was regarding this very issue after which it was her who came up first to say i'm sorry and yet, not sorry but this ain't workin, but silent sorry and the relationship got back on the track again. that's the thing with her, there's always a half-finished, half started story after which she's removing her from the situation (that's, imo, implied at the very start of the movie when they showed her as a girl and how easily she cut the hair she has let grow for awhile) - she did help him with getting with it (tom quitting, working, meeting autumn) but all that was just an expression of interest in what he might be missing, there wasn't much of the real encouragement. it's not that i find her b*tch, i just find her very hard to understand.

as for tom, i think you summed him up perfectly. i'm not denying this story came from tom's side, but i don't find him innocent either in this whole story, but i def understand him more than i do her. if the reason for that is cus it's his side from which this whole story is lamented then fine, i just don't think it's all due to that fact. :ninja:

papa_levante has probably posted this before (I've lost track :p), but I love this

Tom: I think it’s official, I’m in love with Summer. I love her smile. I love her hair. I love her knees. I love this heart-shaped birthmark she has on her neck. I love the way she sometimes licks her lips before she talks. I love the sound of her laugh. I love the way she looks when she’s sleeping. I love how I hear this song every time I think of her. I love how she makes me feel. Like anything’s possible, like life is worth it.

So, I'm going to have to agree with Tennie. How could ANYONE besides Zooey have filled the shoes of Summer and still have had so much chemistry with Joe? It's not possible, folks.

And for those saying that Zooey's acting was mediocre or flat... that is the character she was playing. Her character is numb, lacking emotions, and putting on an act. Tom foolishly falls for it since Summer is everything he has always wanted.

I'm just curious as to who else you guys would cast instead of Zooey?

I don't think Summer put on an act for Tom. She made it perfectly clear that she wasn't looking for a relationship. Tom was just desperate to prove her she was wrong and he saw things that weren't there.

I would have loved to see Amanda Seyfried in the role of Summer, or Olivia Thirlby. They are both very talented and would have pulled off the role much better imo. Plus I think Zooey's portrayal of Summer alienated Summer from the audience.

I agree with everything Working Girl said. I find it funny that there are people who are enraged with the fact Zooey didn't get nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Actress slot, when in fact she was a secondary character. And she was wooden, but that's another thing.

Also, random and stupid question: is that birthmark really Zooey's?

I love that scene too. But I love the one where he denigrates her even more.

I also loved when Paul said this. It was so cute.
Robin is better than the girl of my dreams. She's real.

This was a fun movie...really the only movie that was released in 2009 and I saw it.

I can't imagine either of those girls could portray Summer at all. I'm biased because I adore Zooey but the point is that summer is supposed to have this huge wow-factor about her and while I think Olivia is pretty and also a great actress, I don't think she has that. I also am not a fan of Amanda but I don't see her as being the particular embodiment of Tom's wants and desires. But of course we can agree to disagree on that. I respect your opinion, of course!

On another note though, I think we have to remember this film is never from Summer's perspective. The only window we have to her character is what Tom sees and how Tom feels. If she's flat (and to a degree she is, only because we don't learn a great deal about her beyond the surface) it's because this is what Tom saw, and how he sees her. That's kind of the point, that he loved the idea of summer, and desperately wanted her to be the one. What mattered to him were that they liked the same music and books but beyond that Tom didn't know that much about Summer! No wonder she wasn't in love, he hardly knew all that much about her!

I also read something about this somewhere before but it's sort of interesting that during the one scene that Summer opens up to Tom, the Narrator speaks over her and talks about how self congratulatory Tom was that he was getting further in their "relationship" than anyone before her. I took it to sort of suggest in a way he wasn't really hearing what she was saying at all. That's just my take on it of course. There's definitely more to her but because of how the movie is only through Tom's eyes, we don't really get a chance to see that.

Aww I'm kinda sad they didn't win the Golden Globe for Best Picture - Comedy or Musical :(

This movie is definitely told from Tom side and there is two perfect examples how he was pointing out her features only when did they break up he turned them into flaws. I think people do miss the point of perspective but I guess I don't blame them that they see the movie of how it is instead of analyzing it.

Also, though I did love and adored the movie,I didn't really think it earned the GG. Or maybe its my mentality of a comedy or some musical to a less of a degree to win big awards like GG or Oscars? I always found awards to associate with drama. Though Independent awards are a different scenario, did 500DOS win any?

I know they got nominated for an Independent Spirit Award...not sure if they won
it though.

Just because she's likes the same bizzaro crap you do doesn't mean she's your soul mate.
I love this quote. Story of my life. I need the little girl in my life. LOL

^ha ha I know, right? That girl was toooo smart for her own good. All the stuff she said was so funny.

And I'm also sad they didn't win anything. :/

I can't believe I ONLY just saw this movie for the first time today :ninja:

What an amazing movie

^ You have seen the light. Welcome ^_^

I can't wait for my DVD to arrive, so I can watch it over and over again.

I have indeed seen the light! I purchased it yesterday and I have watched it 2 times already :D It's really rare that I can make any connection to a character of a film but I could relate to a lot of both Tom and Summer, especially when Summer says that what got in the way of her previous relationships was "life", that's my answer to everything.
