Alastair McKimm is a Northern Irish stylist who moved to London from Belfast in 1978 to study a BA in Fashion Design. He graduated from Nottingham Trent School of Art and Design in the year 2000. Alastair began his career by assisting Edward Enninful, Fashion Director at Large for i-D magazine. After working as fashion assistant for i-D, he went on to establish himself as a freelance stylist. He now has a long list of clients including Russian Vogue, i-D and Exit magazines. Alastair has a longstanding creative partnership with the London-based Danish designer Jens Laugesen.

this is annoying me. A lot of Imageshack links aren't showing up for me but I know they're there because when I quote the user who posted the original message they show up as icons, but don't load.

Any idea how to fix this or anyone else who experiences the same issue?

^haha, yeah, it happens to me too, and I do the same thing, refresh and they will eventually load..sometimes one by one unfortunately.

i really like the masculine/androgynous quality to a lot of his stylings....
i think he's very successful in putting out different variations of that sort of "look"

Kuki de Salvertes : Alastair, de quelle manière es-tu arrivé à la mode ? Raconte-moi ton parcours initiatique.
Alastair McKimm : A mes 16 ans, j'étais dans une école d'arts en Irlande du Nord où j'y ai étudié, entre autres, la photographie. Je me suis alors vraiment intéressé aux images et magazines de mode. Je voulais partir en Angleterre pour y étudier la photographie. Je ne me souviens plus exactement à quel moment l'idée de devenir un créateur de mode m'est venue mais j'ai déménagé en Angleterre à 18ans pour y étudier la mode.
J'ai fait ça pendant 3 ans et à peine terminé je suis allé directement à Londres. Tout ce que je voulais faire c'était styliste pour le magazine I-D. Il me semble que dés mon 3 ème jour à Londres je me suis rendu chez eux, frappé à leur porte en espérant y travailler ! C'est très embarrassant de se dire que l'on peut juste débarquer dans une rédaction et y travailler. Bien évidement, il m'a fallu quelques années avant de faire mon premier shooting mais c'est grâce à ça que j'ai rencontré Edward (Enninful) et que j'ai commencé à l'assister. C'était bien sûr une expérience inestimable qui m'a conduit à travailler sur mes propres shooting…
KdS : Ton premier shooting ? Quand était-ce ? Pour qui était-ce ? Pour quel magazine ? Quelle trace a-t-il laissé pour toi ?
AMcK : C'était il y a à peu près 5 ans, une double page pour I-D. J'aime toujours cette image, je ne ferai certainement pas la même photo aujourd'hui mais on peut voir que mon travail de maintenant a eu cette esthétique comme point de départ.
KdS : Qu'est ce qui fait la particularité de ton style ?
AMcK : Je suppose que c'est juste de rester fidéle à ce que j'aime. La culture de la jeunesse anglaise et les références urbaines comme les punk, les skinheads, les teds, etc… . J'utilise ces références pour ensuite en faire une mode plus précise. Je pense qu'il y a toujours une réalité dans mon travail.
KdS : A quoi ressemble l'emploi du temps de Alastair Mc Kimm ? Est-ce aussi complexe qu'on l'imagine ? Combien de temps accordes-tu aux éditoriaux ?
AMcK : J'ai l'impression que je n'ai commencé à travailler avec un planning chargé que l'année dernière. J'ai eu le luxe de passer beaucoup de temps sur mes éditoriaux mais maintenant j'ai le sentiment d'y consacrer presque trop de temps.
Parfois je peux passer un long moment sur un editorial, cherchant les bonnes pièces pour les séries. Mais généralement ça ne se passe pas comme ça et les séries doivent être bouclées en une semaine ou deux.
Je viens juste de faire un shooting pour I-D que je voulais faire depuis que j'étais assistant et c'est seulement cinq ans plus tard que le moment a été propice. Alors que certaines idées viennent en une nuit.
KdS : Combien réalises-tu de shooting par saison ?
AMcK : Encore une fois, c'est une chose qui change constamment. Cela ne fait que quelques saisons que je travaille beaucoup mais pour celle-ci je pense en avoir fait autour de 15. J'aimerais réduire à 6!
KdS : Quelle est la séance photo dont tu gardes le meilleur souvenir ?
AMcK : Je ne l'ai pas encore faite.
KdS : Actuellement, qu'est ce qui - chez un créateur, une collection ou un défilé - te rend enthousiaste, te motive, t'inspire?
AMcK : Je pense que ce sont des créateurs qui viennent de leur propre monde comme Raf Simons ou Ann Demeulemeester et d'autres designers qui ont leur propre vision qui semble évoluer chaque saison tout en gardant une intégrité. Je ne peux pas être plus précis mais dés que je vois quelques chose je sais si je l'aime ou non. C'est plus qu'une question d'esthétique.
KdS : Alastair, après le photo stylisme, y a-t-il une vie ? Si oui, quels sont tes projets futurs ?
AMcK : Je viens à peine de commencer, je ne peux pas penser à aussi loin!
Du consulting peut-être!!??

C'est very embarrassing to think that l'on can just unload in a drafting and work there. Well cavity, it m'a taken a few years before making my first shooting but c'est thanks to that that j'ai met Edward (Enninful) and that j'ai started with l'assister. Of course C'était a priceless experiment which m'a results in working on my clean shooting... KdS: Your first shooting? When was this? For which was this? For which magazine? Which trace did it leave for you?
AMcK: C'était about 5 years ago, a double page for I-D. J'aime always this image, I will certainly not make the same photograph aujourd'hui but one can see that my work of now had this esthetics like starting point.
KdS: Qu'est what makes the characteristic of your style?
AMcK: I suppose that c'est just to remain fidéle so that j'aime. Culture of English youth and references urban like the punk ones, skinheads, teds, etc.... J'utilise these references for then making a more precise fashion of it. I think qu'il always has there a reality in my work.
KdS: With what does resemble l'emploi of the time of Alastair Mc Kimm? Is this also complex qu'on l'imagine? How long do you grant to the leading articles?
AMcK: J'ai l'impression that I n'ai started to work with a planning charged that l'année last. J'ai have the luxury to pass much from time on my leading articles but now j'ai the feeling d'y to devote too much time almost. Sometimes I can spend a long moment on a editorial, seeking the good parts for the series. But generally that does not occur like that and the series must be buckled in one week or two. I have just made a shooting for I-D which I wanted to make since j'étais assistant and c'est only five years later than the moment was favourable. Whereas certain ideas come in one night.
KdS: How much do you carry out shooting per season?
AMcK: Once again, c'est a thing which changes constantly. That makes only a few seasons that I work much but for this one I think of having made some around 15. J'aimerais to reduce to 6!
KdS: Which is the photo meeting of which you guards the best memory? AMcK: I l'ai not made yet.
KdS: Currently, qu'est what - at a creator, a collection or a procession - makes you enthusiastic, motivates you, t'inspire?
AMcK: I think that they are creators who come from their own world like Raf Simons or Ann Demeulemeester and d'autres designers which has their own vision which seems to evolve/move each season while keeping an integrity. I cannot be more precise but dice which I see some thing I know if I l'aime or not. C'est more qu'une d esthetic question.
KdS: Is Alastair, after photo stylism, there a life? If so, which are your future projects?
AMcK: I hardly have just started, I cannot think of also far! Consulting perhaps!!??
