Alaïa F/W 2022.23 : Mona Tougaard, Mirthe Dijk & Victoria Fawole by Willy Vanderperre

Is this Alaia’s first ever official RTW campaign!? I think so but I might be wrong…

It’s simply stunning! I’m still on the fence regarding Pieter’s vision but this is quite splendid and glamorous…

^^^ They really are. No amount of creative talent can selvedge such stupid, juvenile designs. It’s so drag circuit and such a caricature of the effortless feminine allure of its founder’s signature. Drag queens should be cast instead.

You’re right. Azzedine never did produce any campaigns in his entire career. He didn’t need to. It’s such a blessing that he came up, flourished in an era where the creatives of the industry were open to support the talents that excited them openly: Alaia was always a familiar name pulled for so many fashion stories— and either featured prominently, or he would even get his designs exclusively featured as an unofficial advertorial. All those immortal shots and stories were campaigns onto themselves.

I watched the 1986 A/W presentation. And with the exception of the footwear (because footwear is always a giveaway to its time), all the designs could easily be worn today and none would be the wiser that they were from 1986. Even Mona's hair here seemed ripped off from that show's styling.

I really can't get past the hideous clothes.

I think the images are great and they do reminisce of the Alaïa spirit.
we all know about the clothes but the videos and images are terrific IMO

They started a very aggressive ad campaign. They bought a lot magazine covers. The Picasso Museum collaboration is classic contemporary dull marketing to create hype - IMO was very bad decision because Picasso never respected women... Now, we see this ordinary ad, but clothes are still clumsy. Alaia women are joyfull and self-confident.

To me Alaïa is Albert Watson or Lindbergh. The last campaign I remember is one with Guinevere van Seenus by Roversi, but it was a fragrance ad .

It’s funny that you mentioned those photographers because I think Alaia’s « visual identity » that has been mostly through editorials, special projects has been very B&W. And that’s maybe why I like this campaign…It has an energy and a movement that I enjoy.

Weirdly for me, Alaia is Gilles Bensimon and styled by Carlyne.

It’s obviously something natural, joyful and that idea of movement. All my favorite Alaia photos were shot by Bensimon for Elle.

To be completely honest, I've never been a one for Willy Vanderperre or Mona Tougaard for that matter but I am loving this! There's a stark simplicity to this that I like, love the photographs with a sense of movement and living for Mona's Tina Turner-esque hair here.

It’s Farida @vogue28 , Farida Khelfa! ^_^

^^^ Farida, Yasmeen, Veronica Webb, Yasmin Le Bon, Gail Elliot, Christy, Beverly Peele, Naomi… These are the women I always associate with Alaia. I get what they’re so desperately attempting with Mona, but they’re failing in every way. She doesn’t possess the effortless grace and elegance, the effervescence, the carefree radiance of these women when they walked for Aliaia and were photographed in his designs. But more than such lessers now being the faces of Alaia, the fashions are just plain cheap-looking: Overwrought, graceless, over-burdened, over-compensating, and downright unflattering… And along with the campaign imagery, it all just resemble a CeCe Peniston video. Giles' shots of women wearing OG Alaia for Elle were light, sensual, easygoing, and effortlessly radiant-- with every piece of clothing looking so refined.

(Can’t stress this enough: can you just imagine Alexandre Vauthier interpreting Alain’s trenchcoats/trench dresses in real croc; voluminous shearling wrap coats; feathery dresses; and those playful, lacey tennis dresses… while seamlessly adding his very own distinct design vocabulary to Alaia's, without it looking like a mangled, heavy mess like it is in Pieter’s heavy hands..??? ...And Alique with her understanding of lightless and smoulder, shooting the campaign...)

This is very interesting and very sexy!

This looks like a cheesy harpers Bazaar editorial during Glenda Bailey years. At best shot by Karl Lagerfeld lolz. This is tragic!
