All the trimmings
A slick of red lipstick, a fabulous vintage frock and a supply of emergency safety pins - four famously glamorous partygoers tell Kate Finnigan the secrets of their festive style
Alexa Chung Television presenter, 24
What are you wearing? An Arrogant Cat dress. It's shorter than the shortest thing you've ever seen in your life, and that's the key to a party dress. My shoes are Beverly Feldman for Russell & Bromley, the necklace is by Mawi and the bag is by Marni but it looks like a pair of grandma curtains.
Alexa Chung: 'This dress is shorter than the shortest thing you’ve ever seen in your life, and that’s the key to a party dress'
What's your party style? Something that I can go to a party in, stay over somewhere else and almost get away with turning up at work without anyone ever knowing I'd been out.
Your favourite party outfit of all time? I never wear chichi things, but for a recent awards night I bought a strapless black silk cocktail dress by Shareen Again, from Koh Samui (a boutique in Covent Garden). It cost about £400, which is very expensive for me.
Are there certain pieces you always have a good time in? I've got a dress by the French designer Isabel Marant. It's cream and looks like a pilgrim's sack, but in the most excellent way possible. I'm a French label fascist - at the moment I love Isabel Marant and APC.
What's your best tip for buying a party dress? Vintage dresses are always good because no one else is going to be wearing the same thing. I like to pop into Beyond Retro in Soho.

One thing that will always dress up a look? Black eyeliner. On the eyelid, not inside. Just a cat-flick.
Clutch or shoulder bag? Neither. A satchel or something equestrian. In fact, if I'm wearing a more formal dress I'll deliberately take an old canvas bag.
How long does it take you to get ready? If I know what I'm going to wear, 15 minutes. Shower, black eyeliner, brown eyeshadow - anything that makes me look like a cat or like I'm in the 1960s. I just want to be Jane Birkin or Julie Christie the whole time. They're the only people who matter.
