It's a cold Monday morning in January, but the photographer's apartment-come-studio at Old Street in East London is warm and buzzy. I've been invited to swing by for some behind-the-scenes action at a shoot for hip Australian, London-based clothing label Antipodium, in which are starring two very trendy girls-on-the-London-scene right now: Alexa Chung, ex-model, TV presenter, and girlfriend to Arctic Monkey Alex Turner; and Valentine Fillol-Cordier, London-based Parisienne model and ex to Kate Moss's current squeeze, Jamie Hince.
When I arrive at the Antipodium shoot, Alexa Chung, dressed in a pair of skinny Balenciaga jeans, a long-sleeved cotton striped T-shirt, frilled smock and brown leather Topshop Brogues, is sitting patiently having her hair make-up done. She's been pals with Antipodium co-founders Geoffrey Finch and Ashe Peacock ever since she DJ'd for them at one of their infamous club nights; now, she's modelling the Spring Summer 2008 collection, a nautically-inspired ensemble of breezy, striped cotton dresses and jackets in a palette of red, white, blue and grey, which will, by the time you read this, be on sale in Liberty and Harvey Nichols. Model Valentine Fillol-Cordier, meanwhile, is here to pose for the Autumn Winter range.
As Alexa squeezes in to her first Antipodium outfit - a grey chambray shirt dress with clear plastic belt ("I've got massive pants on underneath - not a good look", she says), Valentine submits to the ministrations of hair and makeup. Black Starbucks americano in hand, she is refreshingly frank on her fashion tastes; she "hates Topshop" because it is too pricey, and says she doesn't spend a lot of money on clothes, preferring to shop in second hand shops such as Mint, near her home in Swiss Cottage. She does, however, love French label APC, and I notice her right hand is sporting a very eye-catching gold YSL cocktail ring. "To be honest, I don't really shop that much", she says, saying that she wears stuff given to her by designers, and tops up with bits from H&M. Her coat is by her friend and up-and-coming designer,
Charles Anastase.
Antipodium co-founders, Geoffrey Finch and Ashe Peacock, are both on hand at the shoot, helping their friend muse Alexa Chung into their designs, and making sure everything looks just so. The Australian born pair both agree it's no bad thing having the girl of the moment wearing your clothes!
Alexa, excuse the pun, monkeys around in her pink bubblegum hat with cat ears, and freaks out when her horse necklace - rumoured to be a gift from her beau - momentarily goes missing. When she sees the test shots, she looks mock indignant, and wails, "I look rough as! You can't use
that." (I can assert, incidentally, that she looks nothing close to "rough"; indeed about as far away from rough as its possible to get).
