Andreas Melbostad is creative director at Phi. I just read a big article on him and the brand. He's previously worked at Guy Laroche, Yves Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein and Donna Karan.

Any opinions on him and his work? :flower:

I think it's very hard to tell what his style is like personally in the development of the Phi brand, with Susan Dell as the backing force behind the label (She apparently had her own design ambitions going on before she founded Phi).

The collection, I find, had a very promising start with those first, three collections. There was a very consistant thread running through about a certain savage, yet sleekly-executed, independent elegance that was gently tapping from Belgian and Japanese design roots, interpreted with a great deal of sophistication.

Once all the acid printworks, the bags and other curiosities surfaced, I started asking myself if all was in fact only a matter of trend.

You mean the Susan Dell didn't design any of the collections in the beginning? It was handed over to Melbostad?

I think she used to design clothes at a smaller scale before founding Phi... but it was always communicated that she'd be more involved there as 'the backing force' and sort of a spokesperson, rather than actually designing the clothes.

Did anyone know that all of the companies' profits are being donated to charities? It's certain that her involvement is just for the sake of personal joy, rather than runnin a business out of necessity.

Designers' Summer Jobs

Andreas Melbostad of Phi
"I didn't work the summer this photo was taken, but I spent a few weeks every summer in the mid-eighties working in the gardens at a large estate: cutting the lawn, weeding, picking fruits and vegetables. This was highly motivated by my urge to earn money for a black leather biker jacket, Dr. Martens boots, creeper shoes, and other iconic pieces from Bonaparte, a small store specializing in English fashion in Oslo at the time. Every piece was a huge satisfaction and totally worth the effort.
