New Model Army – Aneliese Ryan
Justin van Vliet - June 25, 2015

Name: Aneliese Ryan
Agency: Profile Model Management
Hometown: Hull
Age: 20

How did you become a model?
I’ve always loved modelling. When me and my best friend Jack Thomson were at ballet school (when we were 14), we started our own modelling agency. He was the photographer and I was the model. We used to go into little vintage boutiques on the weekend and school holidays around Chester, Hull and Selby asking if they wanted anybody to model their clothes. It was fun and we actually got quite a lot of work from it, we even managed to book a fashion show.

Since then dancing took over my life and when I was 16, I moved to London to follow my dream. I trained for three years at The Urdang Academy and when I graduated last year I was booked through my dance agency as a model for the Wella Hair Show in Manchester, everyone told me I should sign with an agency.

But I was so busy with my dancing and I didn’t think I was good enough for a big agency in the capital! In march the dance industry was quiet so I decided that I would try some agencies and within two days i’d gone into pretty much every agency in London and nobody wanted to sign me.

I was either too short, or they “already had somebody like me on their books” one agency even said to me that my boobs were too big, another said my smile wasn’t big enough and i got told by one to come back when my acne had cleared up (I didn’t even have acne) the last agency to visit was Profile. I wasn’t going to go because i was so deflated after all the negative feedback I was getting from other agencies, but I’m a strong person and thought if I don’t go I’ll only regret it, so I did it and they was more than happy to sign me. I was so grateful and so excited and I absolutely love them. It was just meant to be.

Who is your favourite designer?
I love Alexander McQueen. I’ve always dressed quirky and just think his work is out of this world! Although majority of my clothes are from the highstreet, Zara is my best friend.

Who are your heroes in life?
My biggest heroes in life are my family. I’m one of four children and we are all so supportive of each other. But most of all my mum and dad, they have supported me mentally and financially through my whole life and inspired me to follow my dreams and never give up.

What is your present state of mind?
Just happy :)

What is your idea of happiness?
I think my idea of happiness is the realisation of how happy you actually are. As a model you spend so much time running around from castings to jobs and everything in between that it’s easy to forget who and what you are. Sometimes I just like to stop and think, “Wow I am so lucky to be given this opportunity” and that’s what makes me happy.

How would you like to be perceived by others?
I’d like to think i was perceived by others as the person I actually am, happy and little bit wacky.

If you were not a model, what would you be?

I don’t know, I love making and designing clothes. I design all my own dance costumes and my prom dress and graduation ball gown. Oh and I’d love to have my own dance agency/school.

What advice do you have for other models?
To stay positive and remember who you are, grasp every opportunity with both hands! Don’t be afraid of rejection. Every time you’re being “rejected” you’re actually being re-directed to something even better.

ANELIESE RYAN | AN INTERVIEW WITH A MODEL
My today’s interview is with Aneliese Ryan. Aneliese is not only a beautiful model with incredible eyes, but also a very talented dancer and kind person. She told me how her friend and she created their own model agency at the age of 13 and what was her first job. Enjoy!

Yuliya: What agency are you with?

Aneliese Ryan: I’m with Profile Model Management.

Yuliya: How long have you been modelling for?

Aneliese Ryan: I’ve always done bits and bobs since I was about 13. Me and my best friend Jack Thomson started our own modelling agency when we were at ballet school together, he was the photographer and I was the model. We used to go round to vintage clothing boutiques and ask if they wanted some photos for their brand, some would actually to pay us too! My first professional campaign was for Figs&Rouge organic skin care, when I was about 14. I signed with Profile about 11 months ago.

Yuliya: What made you go into modelling?

Aneliese Ryan: Like I say I’ve always done little bits, however my main passion in life has always been dancing. After completing my training, I was booked through my dance agency as a model for Wella (*hair show). All the makeup artists and stylists were asking what agency I was with, (*I wasn’t signed at that point). So, just thought I’d try my luck with the open calls in a few London agencies. I was over the moon when Profile wanted to sign me.

Yuliya: What is it like being a female within the fashion industry?

Aneliese Ryan: It’s competitive I’m not going to lie. BUT it’s nothing how I imagined it to be. There are so many beautiful girls out there, and you don’t always get the job you want but fashion never sleeps, so if you’re not right for that one, you’ll be perfect for the next. The key is to stay positive.

Yuliya: Are all the rumors true about what you hear about models starving themselves and and not looking after bodies?

Aneliese Ryan: As far as I’m aware models DON’T starve themselves, our bodies are what makes us our money, so obviously we have to meet the appearance the industry requires. I think its more about exercise and keeping toned than starving ourselves. I regularly go out on lunch dates with my girls and happily demolish a cheesy pizza! Most of my friends go to the gym and work out and live a healthy lifestyle as do I. But we’re still human and still enjoy pigging out every now and then.

Yuliya: What is the best job you have done as a model and why?

Aneliese Ryan: I did my first season of London Fashion Week back in September, and it was incredible!! I love doing cat walk. I think it feels more like a performance and I love the adrenalin you get just before you walk out, and the rush to get changed and back out on time!

Yuliya: How much competition do you face and how do you overcome it?

Aneliese Ryan: The modelling industry is competitive, because there are so many beautiful girls out there, however fashion never sleeps and if you’re not right for one job you’ll probably be perfect for the next. The key is to stay positive!

Yuliya: What is an average 9-5 day like (Is it all glitz and glamour)?

Aneliese Ryan: An average 9-5, gosh I get this all the time “ooo Aneliese you lead such a glamours lifestyle” there are two types of days in the world of a model: shoot days and casting days. A shoot/show day is amazing, and it really is glamorous, hours in hair and make up, manicure and pedicure, beautiful clothes ect. Casting days are not so glamorous, especially if its raining. They are usually all over London, so the majority of the day is spent on the underground. Citymapper is a models best friend and if your phone dies half way through the day, you’re pretty screwed! At each casting you must change into your heals top up makeup, brush your hair and present your book and cards, and then straight onto the next. Which will usually be on the complete opposite side of London and you only have 15 minutes to get there, and you repeat this around 4-7 times a day. It’s hard work, but I love it!

Yuliya: How do you unwind after a hard day at work?

Aneliese Ryan: I like to take all of my makeup off, get into my pjs with a face mask on and watch a movie, or see friends for dinner and drinks.

Yuliya: What is the hardest thing about the modelling industry for you?

Aneliese Ryan: I think the hardest thing is realizing how lucky us models are. There are few people in the world that are able to wake up in a morning and say wow I can’t wait to go to work.''

Yuliya: Beauty or fashion?

Aneliese Ryan: Fashion!

Yuliya: If you could improve one thing about the industry what would it be?

Aneliese Ryan: I really don’t know how to answer this question. I’ve only ever had positive experiences in my modelling career so far.

Yuliya: Who do you dream to work for?

Aneliese Ryan: I’d love to walk for Vivienne Westwood!

Yuliya: Prada or Chanel?

Aneliese Ryan: Prada

Yuliya: Catwalk or campaign?

Aneliese Ryan: Catwalk

Thank you so much Aneliese Ryan for this interview!
