Any Nylon Alternatives?

but their very bright and neon and nu-wave as the australian scene ever is and it can be too much, sometimes.

I caved in to temptation and bought Missbehave (cute pink cover with Lydia Hearst). Not as bad as I thought it would be. I find a good percentage of their articles witty and amusing, although some are trying hard to be wigga I think. There are a couple of paragraphs that I feel should be translated to english, it's like ebonics by way of hipster new york. I guess I am just not cool enough for this magazine too. Too bad, some parts did amuse me. The eds are okay and are pretty enough, I like the layouts, although too many fonts sometimes, but hey, nothing could ever be as bad as elle.


(Out of topic, but I also bought this photography magazine supermodel issue, and they do have a lot of model pictures by just about every model I know, grouped by their model agencies. Lots of nudes for the perves out there. It's in french (Photo magazine). Borders placed the magazine in opaque plastic because I guess they were offended by Natalia Vodianova's breasts, ha ha. Also has outtakes from 2008 Pirelli calendar: Agyness, Sasha, Gemma, Doutzen, Coco. I thought it was worth my $5. I looked back around 10 pages and I didnt find any mention of this, but I suppose, since you guys are more into this than I am, you probably would've known already.

Another great alternative to Nylon is Frankie Australia.
It's filled with cute editorials and has an artistic twist!

lula is my new favorite it's very aesthetically pleasing but i'm so glad i kept my old nylon issues though. i have one with jessica miller on the cover and it's my favorite issue by far. plus, they're selling nylon at urban outfitters stores so you know that all the hipsters are gonna buy it and act like they've discovered nylon magazine

what do you think a magazine would need to rival vintage nylon? i cant believe america is so lacking and we have to turn to the uk and beyond constantly..you ar right about the 18-30 market...what are we missing??

i think what is missing is the attention to the indie world..it seems that nylon is going for the indie "commercialized " world and not the true scene and the independent underground nature that it first represented. the only reason that nylon is more visible is because they have more money now and are more exposed..they have ads on the top of cans in NYC for god sakes!

That's kind of true. It doesn't feel like they genuinely like the stuff that they feature, I smell the equivalent of payola and money changing hands in every celeb/act/band/fashion item they peddle. They hype everything so much, every article seems like they are written by the designer/celeb/band's publicist, there's no insight at all about them and certainly no emotion. It's like a Lucky magazine for hipster musical acts. No wonder they are so hipster pretentious now.

Nylon is

It is really bad. The "articles" are written terribly. And the letters section in the beginning waxing overly poetic about how "original" and wonderful Nylon is nausea inducing.

The way they choose to hype items in their mag makes me feel like I'm reading an Urban Outfitterized Lucky Magazine. I think the spread about Scarlett Johansen and her new album was the straw that broke the camel's back. The photos were bad and her music was just awful so I couldn't understand the praise for her at all. That, and Cory Kennedy.

I like Jalouse a million times better.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned already, but if you can find it, Russh magazine is pretty good. It's an Australian magazine and it's definitely aimed at a younger sort of audience and I really like it, so I think it's worth keeping your eyes peeled for that.

Other than that I mainly read Lula, i-D and Dazed & Confused as alternatives to Nylon. I totally agree that younger fashion magazine readers are missing out on having a magazine targeted at them, since Nylon started trying too hard to be cool.

Z!NK or Z!NK Canada is a great alternative for former Nylon readers. It feeds us our fashion in a classy way but with the same indie-feel as Nylon minus the fanny-pack tributes.

The content is really grown up in comparison to Nylon and I would say it would best appeal to the taste of 19-26 year olds.

Do a google search and check out their website to get a better feel of the magazine.

i wholeheartedly agree...but my BF keeps saying to stop complaining and explain my ideal mag for the 19-30 market and I really dont know anymore..I mean it has been so lacking since nylon turned on us and I cant get my hands on Lula that I dont even know what would be the perfect mag to replace nylon if it even exists..I have heard of Russh, thanks for mentioning as well as the new Stimuli..but what do you guys think the 20-something market would love to see if we could all create our own independent mag?

- Thoughtful, inspired writing, witty and serious at turns. Above all, articles that avoid idolatry and overblown hype, whether a journalist is profiling an actress, a band, a designer, whatever. I don't want to be told how cool and iconic someone is, especially if that person is my contemporary. At the same time, I would prefer that articles be written in a good-natured, not mean-spirited way.

- I don't mind if the fashion featured in magazines is not affordable, as it is just fantasy after all, and who wouldn't want to look at beautiful clothes? But I would like it to be styled in a way that provides adequate inspiration for the reader. Often in high-fashion magazines, I'll see models dressed in a singular dress or outfit of some designer, and feel dejected that I can't attain that. But when there are stylistic touches thrown in, I feel inspired and try to recreate a certain feeling or mood that the editorial conveys.

- More beauty coverage. Makeup and hair are such an affordable way for young people to experiment with their style, I'm surprised more magazines targeted to this audience don't feature such articles.

wow never thought people felt that way about affordable fashion..you dont mind it being high end as long as it inspires..really good point! and i should know, i have my years of mag tear sketchbooks that prove that very idea..and yeah, i guess the beauty is another thing..but what about Allure? no one reads that anymore? what do you guys feel about design (decor) and art...are those two aspects that should keep their head out of fashion magazines? i hear allot of bickering back and forth that fashion should be strictly fashion, but I am finding as a young woman I want more to cater to my lifestyle in general, not just my attire

I do like Allure in theory, and usually purchase it, but their recent focus on cosmetic procedures has left me cold. I've come across more than one article in Allure that hints that 25-year-olds should start doing botox shots. Moreover, I find most of the beauty/fashion features and celebrity profiles very bland and repetitive.

I would like to see a magazine that features art and design, but I'm weary of being sold a lifestyle. So it would have to be done in a way that isn't pushy. One of my favorite magazines is Another Magazine (which I feel has greatly diminished in quality, but that's another story) and it is extremely well-rounded. It contains articles about social movements, art, design, literature, but it's done in a very creative way. It's actually a joy to leaf through.
