My natural hair color is a dark blonde, but whenever I go back to my natural color or something similar it just doesn't look flattering. It looks dull and boring and washes me out (I'm really pale) And everyone comments on how tired I look or asks if I'm sick.
I've been dying my hair a dark red and it looks way better, it seems the darker I dye my hair the better it looks. My skin looks clearer and my eyes stand out much more. I'm thinking of taking the plunge and going black.

I'm just curious to know if anyone else has the same problem, that your natural hair color just isn't flattering, I always thought that your natural hair color was supposed to be

I have the same problem, which I also always felt was strange since they say your natural color supposedly suits you best.

Personally my hair is naturally dark brown, but for the last few years I've maintained light brown hair to blonde (yes that means I get my hair bleached), which both in my opinion and others looks best. Although I don't mind darker hair, I feel that it makes me look sallow and sickly, and possibly a bit too "strong" for my features. The only plus is that it makes my eyes stand out in contrast. However, with my lighter hair I feel that overall I glow, look healthier, and appear more approachable. Plus, I feel good when my hair is lighter :p.

My hair is medium blonde and for a long time (10 years) I dyed it jet black because I thought it looked much better than my natural colour. However for the last 4 years I've gone back to my natural colour (albeit with some highlights) and it really does look better, I just didn't perceive it that way back then! And I look at my hair colour when I was younger and it was just gorgeous - really ashy and light. Damn teenage years and messing round with dyes. Although some people have said I suit both light and dark hair, I just feel that lighter hair suits me better these days.

Debra Messing is a natural brunette, but looks better as a redhead. Leighton Meester is a natural dark blonde, looks better as a deep brunette.

It's not your natural color that suits you best, but your natural tone (ashy, golden, cool, warm etc). It's also best not to stray far away from the natural contrast between your hair, skin, and eye color, which usually means not going more than 2 shades lighter or darker.

Another factor is that often our haircolor either darkens or dullens as we grow older. Children tend to have naturally highlighted, brightly colored hair, and I don't just mean blondes. So the color you had as a child would also be very flattering. If you reverted to your natural color via hairdye, then it might be flat, without the natural variations and highlights that natural hair has. That may be why it didn't suit you.

^The thing is I didn't dye it back, I just let the dye fade out and then grow out.....I didn't think it looked that bad until I saw pictures of myself (both in sunlight and inside)

I have a few friends that have naturally darker hair and have to dye it lighter especially around the face to keep from looking washed out, but it seems that I have to dye it drastically different to be flattering.

Yes. I'm really fair and my natural hair color is a warm, dark blonde. It makes me look sickly. It looks better when it's a cooler blonde, but maintaining blonde hair is so much work. It's natural right now and I'm not sure what to do with it. I've sort of accepted that I always look ill and like I'm on the verge of fainting.

^My sister (and also my hairdresser) bugged me for years to let her dye my hair a really pale almost white blonde because she said it would look great but I was too afraid of having to maintain such a colour without my hair falling out from bleach :p
I too tried to just accept my natural color and was fine with it for a while but then got the ol' hair dye itch, I don't think I could go back now, I keep getting way too many compliments on how much better it looks now :S

My natural haircolour is really weird on me, I am a blonde but I have really dark eyebrows and darkbrown eyes. So I always dye my hair darker as it just suits me better.
